St Goran
St Goran is a coastal civil parish in Cornwall, England, UK, six miles (10 km) south-southwest of St Austell. The largest settlement in the parish is the coastal village of Gorran Haven, a mile to the east with a further cluster of homes at Trevarrick. The population (including Boswinger) at the 2011 census was 1,411. The parish is bounded by the sea to the east and south. It is bordered by St Michael Caerhays parish to the west and by St Ewe and Mevagissey parishes to the north. The patron saint Guron or Goronus is said to have come here from Bodmin. The parish church is a fine building of the 15th century though the foundation is Norman. Features of interest include the bench ends and the late medieval font. At Gorran Haven is a 15th-century chapel of St Just, restored in the 1860s. Gorran Churchtown
Gorran Churchtown is a village in the parish of St Goran (where the 2011 census population was included ), Cornwall, England. Gorran Churchtown is situated approximately nine miles (14 km) south-southwest of St Austell; Gorran Haven, the largest settlement in the parish, is a mile to the east. Gorran Churchtown lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). St Goran Church The Church of St Goran is part of a wider benefice involving St Just (Gorran Haven) and St Michael Caerhays. All three are part of the Diocese of Truro. Refurbishment of the Bell Tower Prior to 2015, the Church's bell tower had a ring of 6 bells. After fundraising effort and receipt of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, St Goran were able to preserve their existing Georgian bells in a traditional wooden frame while installing a refurbished set of 8 Victorian bells from the former church of St Mary the Virgin in Chatham, Kent. Gorran Haven
Gorran Haven () is a fishing village, in the civil parish of St Goran, on the south coast of Cornwall, England, UK. It is about south of Mevagissey and lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Overview The village lies in a cove between two sandy beaches. Vault Beach (also known as Bow beach) is south of Gorran Haven and Great Perhaver Beach is to the north, both beaches are naturist beaches. Gorran Haven was an ancient fishing harbour; its first pier was built in the 15th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries it became a port handling merchandise brought from Fowey by barges and lighters. The pier was rebuilt in the 1820s and reconstructed in 1888. There are two churches in the village, Haven Church (previously Mount Zion), and St Just Church. St Just Church had been used as a fish cellar for over a century. Nicholas Of Gorran
Nicholas of Gorran (or Gorrain) (1232–1295) was born in Gorron, France. He was a prominent French Roman Catholic medieval preacher and scriptural commentator. Biography Gorran entered the Dominican Order in the convent of his native town and became one of its most illustrious alumni. His talents singled him out for special educational opportunities, and he was sent accordingly to the famous convent of St. James in Paris, where he subsequently served several terms as prior. His piety and sound judgment attracted the attention of King Philip IV of France, whom he served in the double capacity of confessor and adviser. In most of his ecclesiastical studies he does not seem to have excelled notably; but in preaching and in the interpretation of the Scriptures he was unsurpassed by his contemporaries.
