Goris Municipality
Goris Municipality, referred to as Goris Community ( hy, Գորիս Համայնք ''Goris Hamaynk''), is an urban community and administrative subdivision of Syunik Province of Armenia, at the south of the country. A municipality in Armenia referred to as community ( hy, համայնք ''hamaynk'', plural: hy, համայնքներ ''hamaynkner''), is an administrative subdivision consisting of a settlement ( hy, բնակավայր ''bnakavayr'') or a group of settlements ( hy, բնակավայրեր ''bnakavayrer'') that enjoys local self-government. The settlements are classified as either towns ( hy, քաղաքներ ''kaghakner'', singular hy, քաղաք ''kaghak'') or villages ( hy, գյուղեր ''gyugher'', singular ( hy, գյուղ ''gyugh''). The administrative centre of a community could either be an urban settlement (town) or a rural settlement (village). Two-thirds of the population are now urbanized. As of 2017, 63.6% of Armenians live in urban areas as compared to 36.4% in rural. Shurnukh
Shurnukh ( hy, Շուռնուխ) is a village in the Goris Municipality of the Syunik Province in Armenia. The village is located on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. Following the end of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war and the withdrawal of Armenian forces from the adjacent Qubadli District of Azerbaijan, a small part of the village, including 12 houses, was determined to be part of the Qubadli District and fell under the control of Azerbaijan. The village had an Azerbaijani-majority population prior to 1989, when the Azerbaijani inhabitants fled as a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, after which the village was repopulated by Armenians who fled from Azerbaijan. Nerkin Khndzoresk
Nerkin Khndzoresk ( hy, Ներքին Խնձորեսկ) is a village in the Goris Municipality of the Syunik Province in southeastern Armenia. Nerkin Khndzoresk is located close to the border, and is located 21 km from Goris of the Stepanakert highway. The village lies 7 km from the Khndzoresk village connected by farm fields and one dirt road. The remote village is positioned below the larger village and is surrounded by rolling hills, gorges, and scenic mountains. History The village was founded in 1983 as a result of resizing of the bigger village of Khndzoresk. After the foundation of the village of Khndzoresk, the lower Nerkin Khndzoresk was established to strengthen the southeastern borders of Armenia, and was strategically placed below the larger village to prevent enemies from attacking. Khndzoresk
Khndzoresk ( hy, Խնձորեսկ, ) is a village in the Goris Municipality of the Syunik Province in Armenia. The village is located to the east of the Goris-Stepanakert highway, on the steep slopes of Khor Dzor (Deep Gorge), which the village is named after, according to tradition. Crossing the bridge at the entrance of the village, the road continues towards the towns of Lachin and Stepanakert. New Khndzoresk (the current inhabited area) was built in the 1950s.
