Gordon Van Haarlem
Gordon John van Haarlem (born 26 July 1956) is a Canadian outlaw biker who was one of the "Port Hope 8" tried in one of the most controversial trials in Canadian history. Satan's Choice Born in Peterborough into a working class Dutch-Canadian family, van Haarlem joined Satan's Choice Motorcycle Club as a teenager. He worked as a welder at construction sits. Port Hope 8 Case
The Port Hope 8 case refers to the trial of eight members of the Satan's Choice Motorcycle Club in 1979 for the murder of William John Matiyek on 18 October 1978 at the Queen's Hotel in Port Hope, Ontario. Of the accused, six were convicted, and the case is widely considered to be a miscarriage of justice. Of the "Port Hope 8", Gary Comeau and Richard Sauvé were convicted of first degree murder; Jeff McLeod, David Hoffman, Merv Blaker and Larry Hurren were convicted of second degree murder; and Armand Sanguigni and Gordon van Haarlem were acquitted. Background The largest motorcycle gang in Ontario in the 1960s-1970s were the Satan's Choice Motorcycle Club founded in 1965. Larry Hurren
Lawrence James Hurren (1 May 1955 – 30 July 1996) was a Canadian outlaw biker and one of the Port Hope 8. Satan's Choice An young man from Oshawa who worked at various times as an automobile worker or a cabbie, Hurren was a close friend of Lorne Edgar Campbell with he had boarded with as a teenager. Campbell had sponsored Hurren into the Satan's Choice Motorcycle Club. Hurren fought as an amateur boxer with Campbell as his manager. Despite their friendship, Campbell once nearly shot Hurren he attempted to break into the Oshawa clubhouse after he lost his key. In June 1978, Hurren along with his fellow Satan's Choice bikers Gary Comeau, Jeff McLeod, and Gordon van Haarlem were charged with a brawl at the Alderville Indian Reserve when they gate-clashed a party at the reserve, which led to a number of fights. Mick Lowe
Mick (Michael) Ellenwood Lowe (23 September 1947 – 17 April 2021) was an author, journalist, and writer based in Sudbury, Ontario, whose work appeared in a diverse range of Canadian publications including Maclean's, Canadian Business, Canadian Lawyer, ''The Globe and Mail'', the ''Financial Post Magazine'' and ''Northern Ontario Business''. Going North Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1947 to Jack and Grace (Ellenwood) Lowe. About his youth, he recalled: "I was a reader. I loved to read. I liked to read about kids going to West Point, the Naval Academy, and jet fighter pilots. I was all into the American military Second World War stories. David George Hoffman
David George Hoffman (born 3 March 1948) is a Canadian man wrongly convicted of murder, for which he served four years in prison for before he was acquitted on an appeal. Satan's Choice Hoffman was born on a farm between New Dundee and Plattsville. Unlike most outlaw bikers, Hoffman was a successful student who graduated with honors from the Waterloo Oxford Secondary School in 1966. In the spring of 1967, he joined the Preston (modern Cambridge) chapter of the Satan's Choice Motorcycle Club. Shortly afterwards, he began to work at the B.F. Goodrich Company factory in Kitchener. Unlike most members of Satan's Choice, Hoffman held a legitimate job and worked for a living. Hoffmann transferred over to the Kitchener chapter of Satan's Choice and served as the treasurer from October 1967 onward. Jeff McLeod
Jeffery McLeod (born 1955) is a Canadian biker who was of the Port Hope 8. McLeod's conviction for second degree murder is controversial. Satan's Choice McLeod was born into a middle-class family in Scarborough (modern Toronto). As a student at Warden Avenue Public School and at Corvette Junior Public School his grades were outstanding until his parents divorced, which caused him to fell into depression and a related decline in his grades. A talented hockey player who was abnormally tall as a child as he stood 5'11 by the age of 12, McLeod had ambitions of becoming a professional hockey player in the National Hockey League. McLeod played for the Toronto Marlboros, the junior A team for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but at the age of 15 McLeod was expelled on the account of him being too overweight to play hockey successfully.
