Gordon Clifford (rugby League)
Gordon Lionel Clifford (1928–2008), also known by the nickname of "Punchy", was an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1950s. A state and national representative and prolific goal-kicker, he played his club football in Sydney mainly with Newtown, who have named him as one of their greatest ever players. A South Sydney junior player, Clifford started playing in the NSWRFL premiership for the Newtown club in 1951. He played at fullback for Newtown in their loss to Souths in the 1954 NSWRFL season's grand final, kicking six goals. In the grand final of the 1955 NSWRFL season the same two sides again faced each other. Clifford missed a 79th minute field goal attempt and Souths were again victorious. The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARL), formerly the Australian Rugby Football League known as the Australian Rugby League is an Australian rugby league football competition operator. It was founded in 1986 as the Australian Rugby Football League Limited and succeeded the Australian Rugby Football League Board of Control which had been formed in 1924. Alan James Whiticker (born 1958) is an Australian non-fiction author and publisher, with over 50 published books on history, sport, biography, true crime and lifestyle. Whiticker writes primarily on matters pertaining to the history of the sport of rugby league in Australia, but he has also published works on subjects as diverse as classical film, pop culture, the Wanda Beach Murders and an adaptation of Homer's ''Iliad''. He is a former teacher and commissioning editor for a publishing company but now works as a freelance writer. Early life and education Whiticker was born in Penrith, New South Wales on 15 December 1958. He attended St Dominic's College, Penrith and Nepean College of Advanced Education (now Western Sydney University), where he obtained a Diploma of Teaching in 1979 and a Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree in 1985. Great Britain National Rugby League Team
The Great Britain national rugby league team represents Great Britain in rugby league. Administered by the Rugby Football League (RFL), the team is nicknamed The Lions. For most of the 20th century, the Great Britain team toured overseas, played against foreign touring teams and competed in the Rugby League World Cup, which they won three times: in 1954, 1960 and 1972. Since 1995, the RFL has sent separate home nations teams to the World Cup. Great Britain continued to compete as a Test playing nation both home and away. They competed against Australia for the Ashes, and New Zealand for the Baskerville Shield, as well the Tri-Nations series with both Australia and New Zealand.
