Gordie Ion
Gordon Ion (born 26 August 1934) is a Canadian former soccer player. He was a standout player that played for several teams, most notably North Shore FC with whom he reached the 1954 and 1957 Canadian final. He was Canada's starting outside right in two matches during FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in 1957. He is an honoured member of the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame. After making his Pacific Coast League debut in 1951–52, Ion won the Ed Bayley Trophy in 1952-53 as BC Soccer's most outstanding player in his first full year in senior soccer. At the start of the 1953–54 season, he played in the 1953 North American championship on loan with Westminster Royals FC, helping the Canadian club win the Jack Diamond Trophy over the Chicago Falcons. From 1953 to 1957, Ion was a British Columbia all-star in five consecutive seasons. Pacific Coast Soccer League (1908-73)
The Pacific Coast Soccer League is an amateur soccer league, currently featuring teams from British Columbia. In the past clubs from Washington and Oregon have competed. PCSL is considered to be British Columbia's premier summer league. The league winners are not eligible for any higher cup competitions; however, most players participate in a winter league, such as the VMSL, VISL or FVSL, where teams do participate in BC Provincial Cup qualification. The league has a short, 2.5-month summer season. The league is considered to be a 4th tier competition next to USL League 2. The PCSL comprises elite football players, including ex-pros from Europe and North America, or NCAA or U Sports players and others looking to become professional footballers, or maintain fitness. Greg Ion
Gregory Stewart Ion (born March 12, 1963 in Vancouver) is a Canadian retired soccer midfielder. Professional The son of Gordie Ion, Ion graduated from Burnaby North Secondary School. In 1981, the Portland Timbers selected him in the first round of the North American Soccer League draft. However, he lost the entire 1981 season with a knee injury. He came back in 1982 and played nine games, but the team folded at the end of the season. He then signed with the Montreal Manic, but that team collapsed at the end of the 1983 season. On November 10, 1983, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers purchased his contract from the Manic. The Strikers sent Ion to the Tulsa Roughnecks during the 1984 pre-season. When the NASL collapsed at the end of the season, Ion moved to the Los Angeles Lazers of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Canada Soccer Hall Of Fame
The Canada Soccer Hall of Fame honours people and institutions for their contributions to Canadian soccer. It was founded in 1997 by the Ontario Soccer Association and was originally located in Vaughan, Ontario. As of 2019, the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame has inducted 114 players, 13 managers/coaches, 10 officials, and 40 builders as honoured members. The Challenge Trophy (french: Trophée Challenge) is a national amateur soccer cup in Canada contested by the champions of individual provincial soccer competitions. It is one of the oldest soccer competitions in Canada, being held since 1913. It is run by the Canadian Soccer Association.
