Gora Shan Mt. Shani ( ka, შანი), also known as Shan (russian: Шан) and Shanloam ( inh, Шанлоам, meaning "icy mountain") is a mountain in the Caucasus. It has an elevation of and is on the international border between Georgia and Ingushetia, Russia. The mountain rises immediately to the east of Stepantsminda, Georgia. Stepantsminda
Stepantsminda ( ka, სტეფანწმინდა; formerly Kazbegi, ), is a townlet in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of north-eastern Georgia. Historically and ethnographically, the town is part of the Khevi province. It is the center of the Kazbegi Municipality. Etymology Stepantsminda was named after a Georgian Orthodox monk named Stephan, who constructed a hermitage at this location, as well as advicing people to relocate a little bit south in order to avoid the effect of regular snow avalanche. Geography and climate The town is located along the banks of the Terek River, to the north of Tbilisi at an elevation of 1,740 meters (5,710 feet) above sea level. Gergeti ( ka, გერგეტი; also known as Ortsveri) is a glacier located on the southeastern slope of Mt. Kazbek in the Kazbegi District of Georgia. The length of the Gergeti glacier is and its surface area is . The tongue of Gergeti descends to above sea level. Most of the glacier is located within an old and eroded volcanic caldera, where, at the edge of the caldera's northern rim, rises the cone of Mt. Kazbek. The southern rim of the caldera where the glacier descends, is bounded by Mount Ortsveri. Ultra Prominent Peak
An ultra-prominent peak, or Ultra for short, is a mountain summit with a topographic prominence of or more; it is also called a P1500. The prominence of a peak is the minimum height of climb to the summit on any route from a higher peak, or from sea level if there is no higher peak. There are approximately 1,524 such peaks on Earth. Some well-known peaks, such as the Matterhorn and Eiger, are not Ultras because they are connected to higher mountains by high cols and therefore do not achieve enough topographic prominence. The term "Ultra" originated with earth scientist Steve Fry, from his studies of the prominence of peaks in Washington (state), Washington in the 1980s.
