Gopo Awards
The Gopo Awards ( ro, Premiile Gopo) are the national Romanian film awards, similar to the Academy Awards (US), the Goya Awards (Spain), or the César Award (France). They are presented by the Association for Romanian Film Promotion and were inaugurated in 2007. Trophy Established in 2007, the Gopo Awards were named in honour of Romanian film director Ion Popescu-Gopo, also celebrating the 50th anniversary of his winning a prize in the Cannes Film Festival. The trophy is a sculpture by Romanian artist Adrian Ilfoveanu representing Gopo's Little Man, the main character of Gopo's animation films. The Gopo Awards honour the best Romanian cinematic achievements of the previous year (or, in the case of the "Best European Film" award, the best European film distributed in Romania in the previous year). ''Aurora'' is a 2010 Romanian film written and directed by Cristi Puiu, who also plays the main character. Producer Anca Puiu has described the plot as a "crime story from a new perspective." Stere Gulea
Stere Gulea (born 2 August 1943) is a Romanian film director and screenwriter. He was born in Mihail Kogălniceanu commune, Constanța County, in an Aromanian family that had fled from the Kaliakra region of Southern Dobruja during the 1940 population exchange between Bulgaria and Romania. After attending high school Constanța, Gulea studied philology at the Pedagogical Institute of Constanța and then pursued his studies at the I.L. Caragiale Institute of Theatre and Film Arts (IATC) in Bucharest, graduating in 1970. He made his film director debut that year with ' ("The Water Like a Black Buffalo"); this documentary movie, done in collaboration with his IATC colleagues, Dan Pița and Mircea Veroiu, record the catastrophic 1970 floods in Romania. Călin Peter Netzer (; born 1 May 1975) is a Romanian film director who won the Golden Bear at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival. Born in Petroșani to a family of Romanian and German origins, Netzer emigrated with his family to West Germany in 1983.
