Gopalan Trophy
The M. J. Gopalan Trophy was an annual first-class cricket competition played between Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and Madras (now Tamil Nadu) between 1952–53 and 2007–08. History The idea of the competition came about with the starting of a silver jubilee fund in 1952 to celebrate M.J. Gopalan's 25 years as a cricket and hockey player. Through the fund, an annual cricket match was instituted between Madras and Ceylon and named after Gopalan. The trophy was donated by the Madras cricket administrator V. Pattabhiraman and was presented to the victors after the first match by Learie Constantine. Ceylon won the first match. The match became a regular fixture in the calendar until Sri Lanka received Test status and the competition was stopped. It was revived in 2000 with a match between Tamil Nadu and a Colombo District Cricket Association. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. A significant omission of the ICC ruling was any attempt to define first-class cricket retrospectively. The Singhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground (SSC Cricket Ground) ( si, සිංහල ක්රිඩා සමාජ ක්රීඩාංගනය; ta, சிங்களவர் விளையாட்டுக் கழக அரங்கம்) is one of the most famous cricket grounds in Sri Lanka, and the headquarters of Sri Lanka Cricket, the controlling body of cricket in Sri Lanka. Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan ( (informally Venkat, born 21 April 1945) is an Indian former cricketer. He captained the Indian cricket team at the first two ICC Cricket World Cups, and later became an umpire on the elite International Cricket Council Test panel. His Test career was one of the longest for any Indian player. He also played for Derbyshire in English county cricket from 1973 to 1975. A qualified engineer and an alumnus of Chennai's famed College of Engineering, Guindy, he is a recipient of the civilian honour of Padma Shri in 2003. Duleep Mendis
Deshamanya Louis Rohan Duleep Mendis (born 25 August 1952), known as Duleep Mendis, is a former Sri Lankan cricketer and former captain of the team, who captained Sri Lanka to their first Test series victory in 1985. He was primarily a specialist batsman, whose best period as a player came from 1982 to 1985. He is currently the coach of the Oman national cricket team. He was awarded the Deshamanya (Sri Lanka's second-highest national honour) in 1996. Early years He spent his college life at St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa and S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia. John Arenhold
John Adolf Arenhold (9 May 1931 – 30 September 2017) was a South African cricketer who played first-class cricket from 1953 to 1960. Arenhold went to school at Diocesan College, Cape Town, before attending University College, Oxford. He played as an opening bowler for Oxford University from 1953 to 1955, gaining his Blue in 1954. His best bowling figures for Oxford were 6 for 37 against Middlesex in 1954. When his form fell away in 1955 he was left out of the side, only to take his best first-class figures, 7 for 97, against Oxford for D.R. Jardine's XI. After graduating from Oxford he lived from 1956 to 1958 in Ceylon, working for Shell as a management trainee. He played cricket for Colombo Cricket Club and Rugby union for Dimbulla Athletic and Cricket Club, and represented Ceylon at both sports. Lalith Wasantha Silva Kaluperuma (born 25 June 1949, Colombo) is a former Sri Lankan Test cricketer and ODI cricketer, who played first-class cricket from 1970 to 1983. He played in Sri Lanka's first Test team in 1982. Cricket career Kaluperuma was educated at Kalutara Vidyalaya and Nalanda College, Colombo. He played for Bloomfield in Sri Lankan domestic cricket. Michael Dalvi (born 18 May 1945, Bombay, Maharashtra) is a former Indian cricketer who played first-class cricket from 1966 to 1982. Life and career Dalvi is the son of Brigadier John Dalvi and was educated at the all-boys boarding school The Doon School in Dehradun. He received his undergraduate degree from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. A right-handed batsman who usually batted at number three, Dalvi made his first-class debut in 1966-67 while studying at Delhi University. In his fifth game that season he made 158, his first century, and 45 for Delhi against Services in the Ranji Trophy, top-scoring in each innings. He moved south in 1967 to play for Madras.
