Goodricke National Chess Academy
Goodricke National Chess Academy is a chess training facility in Kolkata, India. It is run by thAlekhine Chess Clubat Gorky Sadan, Kolkata. The club has fostered a number of youth talent including Diptayan Ghosh (winner, under-10 Asian Chess, Turkey) and Sayantan Das ( World Youth Chess Championship U-12 boys, 2008). Diptayan Ghosh
Diptayan Ghosh (born 10 August 1998) is a chess player from Kolkata, India. He was a student of the South Point High School, Kolkata. He qualified as a grandmaster at the age of 17 after achieving his third and final norm required for the title at the HDBank International Chess Open Tournament in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in March 2016. Sayantan Das (born 8 April 1997) is an Indian chess grandmaster. Biography He studied at the Scottish Church Collegiate School in North Kolkata. He later studied commerce at the Scottish Church College between 2014 and 2017. He works at Metro Railway Kolkata. World Youth Chess Championship
The World Youth Chess Championship is a FIDE-organized worldwide chess competition for boys and girls under the age of 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18. Twelve world champions are crowned every year. Since 2015, the event has been split into "World Cadets Chess Championship" (categories U8, U10 and U12) and "World Youth Chess Championship" (categories U14, U16 and U18). Grandmaster (chess)
Grandmaster (GM) is a title awarded to chess players by the world chess organization FIDE. Apart from World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain. Once achieved, the title is held for life, though exceptionally it has been revoked for cheating. The title of Grandmaster, along with the lesser FIDE titles of International Master (IM) and FIDE Master (FM), is open to all players regardless of gender. The great majority of grandmasters are men, but 40 women have been awarded the GM title as of 2022, out of a total of about 2000 grandmasters. Since about the year 2000, most of the top 10 women have held the GM title. There is also a Woman Grandmaster title with lower requirements awarded only to women. Surya Shekhar Ganguly
Surya Sekhar Ganguly (born 24 February 1983), is an Indian chess grandmaster. His peak ELO rating was 2676 (July, 2016). Ganguly became an International Master at the age of 16 and a grandmaster at the age of 19. He has won 40 individual gold, 21 individual silver and 6 individual bronze medals in National as well as International tournaments. He was also the captain of the Indian team in the Asian Nations Online Cup 2020 which won the 2nd place. In addition, in team competitions he has won 12 gold, four silver and three bronze medals. Chanda Sandipan
Sandipan Chanda (born 13 August 1983) is a chess Grandmaster hailing from the city of Kolkata (Calcutta) in the Indian state of West Bengal. He started playing and Sandipan became grandmaster in 2003. In 2004 he won the Curaçao Chess Festival with 7.5/9, a half point ahead of Alexander Shabalov. Sandipan started playing chess at the age of 9, he got interested in chess and saw people play on the streets of Kolkata. He learnt chess through his first coach Late Paritosh Bhattacharya who taught him the rules of chess. He played for India in the Chess Olympiads of 2004, 2006 and 2008. Nisha Mohota (born 13 October 1980 in Hinganghat) is an Indian chess player who holds the FIDE titles of International Master (IM) and Woman Grandmaster (WGM). She is the first WGM from the State of West Bengal. Career She became the then youngest Woman International Master (WIM) in April 1995 at the age of 14 years, 6 months and 13 days on 26 April 1995. In December 1996, Nisha was given a cash award by the then Prime Minister of India, H. D. Deve Gowda, for achieving the coveted title. Nisha held the record for the youngest WIM of India until 1999 when it was broken by Koneru Humpy. Nisha competed in the Women's World Chess Championship in 2001 and 2008.
