Gooch Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Gooch, one in the Baronetage of Great Britain and one in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Gooch Baronets of Benacre Hall The Gooch Baronetcy of Benacre Hall, in the County of Suffolk, was created in the Baronetage of Great Britain on 4 November 1746 for William Gooch, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1727 to 1749. The second Baronet was Bishop of Bristol, Norwich then Ely. He married Mary Sherlock, daughter of William Sherlock, Dean of Saint Paul's Cathedral, London leaving a fairly substantial inheritance. Since then, Sherlock has been included by most succeeding generations as a middle name. The fourth Baronet served as High Sheriff of Suffolk in 1785. The fifth Baronet co-represented Suffolk in the House of Commons from 1806 to 1830. The sixth Baronet likewise won election as Member of Parliament for Suffolk East between 1846 and 1856. Jeffrey Lance Gooch (born October 31, 1974) is a linebacker who played for 10 seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions in the National Football League. Sir Robert Gooch, 11th Baronet
Colonel Sir Robert Eric Sherlock Gooch, 11th Baronet (6 May 1903 – 13 November 1978) was a British Army officer and local politician. Gooch was the son of Sir Thomas Vere Sherlock Gooch, 10th Baronet and Florence Meta Draper. He was educated at Eton College. After attending the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Gooch commissioned into the Life Guards. He saw active service during the Second World War and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1941. Between November 1942 and December 1944 he served as the Commanding Officer of the 1st Household Cavalry Regiment, and from 1944 to 1946 he was Colonel of the Household Cavalry. In 1946 he served as a member of East Suffolk County Council, and on 7 July of that year he succeeded to his father's baronetcy. In 1950 he held the office of High Sheriff of Suffolk. Robert Gooch, M.D. (January 1784 – 16 February 1830) was an English physician. Life Born at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, in June 1784, he was son of Robert Gooch, a sea captain who was a grandson of Sir Thomas Gooch. He was educated at a private day school, and when fifteen was apprenticed to Giles Borrett, surgeon-apothecary at Yarmouth. When Horatio Nelson came to visit the wounded of the battle of Copenhagen, Gooch went round the Yarmouth Hospital with him. In 1804 he went to the University of Edinburgh, where among his friends were Henry Southey and William Knighton. In his vacations he studied German at Norwich with William Taylor, and became engaged to Emily Bolingbroke. He graduated M.D. June 1807, his inaugural dissertation being on rickets. John Beverley Gooch (November 9, 1897 – May 15, 1975) was an American professional baseball player, coach, minor league manager and scout. He played in Major League Baseball as a catcher from to , most prominently for the Pittsburgh Pirates where he was a member of the 1925 World Series winning team.
