Gonzalo Amancha
Gonzalo Amancha (born 1948 in Ambato) is an Ecuadorian master watercolor painter. Biography Amancha began painting and drawing at the age of 5. He got his first job as an artist at the age of 10, when his uncle, who was a painter, took him to Guayaquil to work for Virgilio Jaime Salinas who was well known for creating the first "Juan Pueblo" (a comic strip character famous in Guayaquil). He would apply India ink to Salina's drawings for which he got paid 100-120 sucres per week. At the age of 16 he painted the mural for the Loans Bank of Ambato. He earned a Fine Art's degree from the Central University of Ecuador. He has an art gallery in Guayaquil, in the neighborhood Las Peñas, on the historic street named Numa Pompilio Llona, where he keeps his paintings and sculptures. Aníbal Villacís
Aníbal Villacís (1927, Ambato, Ecuador – March 7, 2012) was a master painter from Ecuador who used raw earthen materials such as clay and natural pigments to paint on walls and doors throughout his city when he could not afford expensive artist materials. As a teenager, Villacís taught himself drawing and composition by studying and recreating the illustrated ad posters for bullfights in Quito. In 1952, Jose Maria Velasco Ibarra, former President of Ecuador, discovered Villacís and offered him a scholarship to study in Paris. After living in Paris for almost a year, Villacís never grew accustomed to the language, so he wrote to the Ecuadorian Minister of Education requesting to transfer his studies to Madrid. Villacís felt more comfortable in Spain and lived there for six years. Juan María Montalvo y Fiallos (13 April 1832 in Ambato – 17 January 1889 in Paris) was an Ecuadorian author and essayist. Biography His grandfather, José Santos Montalvo, born in Andalucía, migrated to América and after some years working as a cinchona bark gatherer across Panamá, Venezuela and Colombia, he arrived at Ecuador where he worked as a seller of fabrics. In Guano, Ecuador, he meets Jacinta Oviedo, whom he married and had many children, one of them was Marcos, father of Juan Montalvo, who worked also as a traveller fabrics seller.
