Inspiration Whether the title of this song was related in any way to the 1936 Margaret Mitchell novel '' Gone with the Wind'' is difficult to determine. The timing of the song's release suggests something more than coincidence, given that the book received enormous publicity in 1937, dominating the bestseller lists and winning a Pulitzer Prize. Still, the lyrics of the song have no obvious connection to the subject matter of the novel. This song should not be confused with any of the well-known music featured in the 1939 film adaptation of the book. Horace Heidt (May 21, 1901 – December 1, 1986) was an American pianist, big band leader, and radio and television personality. His band, Horace Heidt and his Musical Knights, toured vaudeville and performed on radio and television during the 1930s and 1940s. Early years Born in Alameda, California, Heidt attended Culver Academies. At the University of California, Berkeley, he was a guard on the football team. A broken back suffered in a practice session caused him to give up football, leading him to turn his attention to music. He and some classmates formed a band, The Californians. ''Gone with the Wind'' is a jazz album released by The Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1959 on Columbia CL 1347 (monophonic) and CS 8156 (stereo). The origin of the album came out of the Quartet's desire to create an album of original music using unusual meters they discovered abroad such as in traditional Turkish folk music, a project which became '' Time Out''. However, the label executives insisted that the band first create a more conventional album to cover the risk of their preferred concept. The album was recorded in Los Angeles, California on April 22 and 23, 1959. It is a concept album paying tribute to the State of Georgia and to the American South more generally. For this album, the quartet members picked personal favorites. Eugene Wright selected "Ol' Man River". "Short'nin Bread" was a pick of Joe Morello. David Warren Brubeck (; December 6, 1920 – December 5, 2012) was an American jazz pianist and composer. Often regarded as a foremost exponent of cool jazz, Brubeck's work is characterized by unusual time signatures and superimposing contrasting rhythms, Metre (music), meters, and tonality, tonalities.
