Tribute Album
An album is a collection of audio recordings issued on compact disc (CD), vinyl, audio tape, or another medium such as digital distribution. Albums of recorded sound were developed in the early 20th century as individual 78 rpm records collected in a bound book resembling a photograph album; this format evolved after 1948 into single vinyl long-playing (LP) records played at rpm. The album was the dominant form of recorded music expression and consumption from the mid-1960s to the early 21st century, a period known as the album era. ''Sharin' in the Groove: Celebrating the Music of Phish'' is an all-star charity Phish tribute album released on July 24, 2001. It features 23 acts covering 20 Phish songs, all on a volunteer basis, to fund music education for children under the auspices of the Mockingbird Foundation. Over 25,000 copies were sold in the first two weeks, making it one of the fastest selling tribute albums ever. Executive Producer Ellis Godard selected artists to be as diverse as possible in style, genre, and instrumentation, and arranged the tracks to resemble a Phish concert, with the more exploratory material in the second "set" (disc two). Also, in a twist on typical tribute albums, each artist represents an influence ''on'' Phish (such as a style they've mimicked, or an artist they've covered), whereas most tributes feature artists influenced ''by'' the band they are covering. Phish is an American rock band formed in Burlington, Vermont, in 1983. The band is known for musical improvisation, extended jams, blending of genres, and a dedicated fan base. The band consists of guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman, and keyboardist Page McConnell, all of whom perform vocals, with Anastasio being the lead vocalist. ''Rift'' is the fourth studio album by the American rock band Phish, released on February 2, 1993 by Elektra Records. The record is a concept album, detailing the experience of a man dreaming about the rift in his relationship with his girlfriend. It is the second time that the band had recorded an album with such a central concept, the first being the rock opera-styled '' The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday'' from 1987, which has never been officially released. ''A Picture of Nectar'' is the third studio album by the American rock band Phish. The album was released on February 18, 1992, by Elektra Records and was the band's debut release for a major record label. The album is dedicated to Nector Rorris, the proprietor of Nectar's in Burlington, Vermont, where Phish played their first bar gig followed by a series of monthly three-night stands, saying that the experience "taught us how to play". There are two versions of the album's cover. The first printings of the CD were issued in longbox format, and the title of the album was not printed on the CD insert itself. ''The Story of the Ghost'' is the seventh studio album by American rock band Phish, released by Elektra Records on October 27, 1998. The album features an emphasis on the jazz-funk influenced "cow-funk" style, which the group had been experimenting with in concert throughout 1997 and 1998. The album's first single was " Birds of a Feather", which was a Top 20 hit on ''Billboard'' magazine's Adult Alternative Songs chart. Sound and production Much of the album originated during large-scale improvisation sessions. The band then took favorite moments from those in-studio jams and wrote songs around them, adding lyrics from a book of writings by long-time Phish lyricist Tom Marshall. Earl Palmer
Earl Cyril Palmer (October 25, 1924 – September 19, 2008) was an American drummer. Considered one of the inventors of rock and roll, he is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Palmer was one of the most prolific studio musicians of all time and played on thousands of recordings, including nearly all of Little Richard's hits, all of Fats Domino's hits, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" by the Righteous Brothers, and a long list of classic TV and film soundtracks. Rob Ickes hymes with "bikes"is an American dobro (resonator guitar) player, born 1967 in San Francisco, California, United States. Ickes moved to Nashville in 1992 and joined the contemporary bluegrass band Blue Highway as a founding member in 1994. He currently collaborates with guitarist Trey Hensley, with whom he has released three albums. Ickes has been nominated for numerous Grammy Awards, winning two in 1994 for bluegrass and gospel albums he contributed to.
