Gonaïves
Gonaïves (; ht, Gonayiv, ) is a commune in northern Haiti, and the capital of the Artibonite department of Haiti. It has a population of about 300,000 people, but current statistics are unclear, as there has been no census since 2003. History The city of Gonaïves was founded around 1422 by a group of Taíno, who named it ''Gonaibo'' (to designate a locality of cacicat of the Jaragua). The Gulf of Gonâve is named after the town. In 1802, an important battle of the Haitian Revolution, the Battle of Ravine-à-Couleuvres was fought near Gonaïves. Gonaïves is also known as Haiti's city of independence, because it was the location of Jean-Jacques Dessalines declaring Haiti independent from France on January 1, 1804, by reading the Act of Independence, drafted by Boisrond Tonnerre, on the Place d'Armes of the town. Artibonite (department)
Artibonite ( French) or Latibonit (Haitian Creole) is one of the ten departments of Haiti located in central Haiti. With an area of 4,887 km2 it is Haiti's largest department. As of 2015, its estimated population was 1,727,524. The region is the country's main rice-growing area. The main cities are Gonaïves (the capital) and Saint-Marc. In February 2004 an insurgency tried unsuccessfully to declare Artibonite's independence. Hurricane Hanna (2008)
Hurricane Hanna was a moderately powerful but deadly tropical cyclone that caused extensive damage across the Western Atlantic, particularly in the Turks and Caicos Islands and the East Coast of the United States. The eighth named storm and fourth hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. It formed east-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands on August 28. Initially, the storm struggled to intensify due to moderate wind shear as it moved westwards towards the Bahamas. By August 31, Hanna had drifted southwards and began intensifying while over the Bahamas; it attained its peak intensity as a Category 1 hurricane while over the Turks and Caicos Islands. Due to the outflow of the nearby Hurricane Gustav, Hanna weakened back into a tropical storm the next day as it began to drift northwestwards towards the Southeastern United States. Université Publique De L'Artibonite Aux Gonaïves
The Université Publique de l'Artibonite aux Gonaïves (UPAG) is a public institution of higher education located in Gonaïves, Haiti founded on 5 January 2007. Its enrollment for 2016–2017 reached more than 1,400 students. UPAG has a staff of more than 80 professors (full-time/part-time) and more than 45 administrative staff. The University maintains cooperation with the national academia with a network of public sister universities in Les Cayes, Port-de-Paix, Jacmel, Cape, Fort-Liberté, Miragoâne, Jérémie and Hinche, as well as with Quisqueya University. Hurricane Jeanne
Hurricane Jeanne was a Saffir–Simpson scale, Category 3 hurricane that struck the Caribbean and the Eastern United States in September 2004. It was the deadliest hurricane in the Atlantic basin since Hurricane Mitch, Mitch in 1998 Atlantic hurricane season, 1998. It was the tenth named tropical cyclone, storm, the seventh tropical cyclone, hurricane, and the fifth major hurricane of the season, as well as the third hurricane and fourth named storm of 2004 Atlantic hurricane season, the season to make landfall in Florida. After wreaking havoc on Hispaniola, Jeanne struggled to reorganize, eventually strengthening and performing a complete loop over the open Atlantic. It headed westwards, strengthening into a Category 3 hurricane and passing over the islands of Great Abaco and Grand Bahama in the Bahamas on September 25.
