Goliath (Mangalia)
Goliath is the name of a crane that is currently located at the Mangalia shipyard in Mangalia, Romania. Formerly, it was part of the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. History An important facility at the Fore River Shipyard was the Goliath crane, at one point the second largest shipbuilding crane in the world. Constructed in 1975 for building LNG tankers, the crane was a prominent part of the harbor skyline for over thirty years. In early 2008, the tall crane located at the former shipyard was sold to Daewoo-Mangalia Heavy Industries S. A., a joint-venture company of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. of South Korea and former state shipyard 2 Mai Mangalia S. A. of Romania, which dismantled it in 2008 for relocation to Mangalia, Romania. Samson and Goliath are the twin shipbuilding gantry cranes situated at Queen's Island, Belfast, Northern Ireland. The cranes, which were named after the Biblical figures Samson and Goliath, dominate the Belfast skyline and are landmark structures of the city. Comparative newcomers to the city, the cranes rapidly came to symbolise Belfast in a way that no building or monument had hitherto done. Goliath is a crane in Rosyth Dockyard, Scotland, with a lift capacity of , the largest in Britain. History The Goliath was brought to Rosyth from Shanghai in 2011. The crane was used for the assembly of the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers. The crane, which cost £12.2 million, is part of a £80 million investment at Rosyth to allow the assembly of the aircraft carriers. In 2016, it was announced by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance that the Goliath was to be sold. As of 2019 the decision to sell Goliath has been reversed. Design The crane was built by Zhenhua in China, and shipped to the UK partially assembled. After being delivered with the girder and upper sections of the legs assembled, the crane was fully erected on the deck of the ship on which it was transported from Shanghai, before being transferred complete onto its rails.
