Golden Mike Award
The Golden Mike Award is a broadcast journalism award presented by the Radio and Television News Association (RTNA) of Southern California. Awards are given in the categories of television news and radio news. Eligibility is limited to a select group of Southern California counties. Golden Mike (e.g. "microphone") Awards are presented at a gala dinner in Hollywood every January. History The RTNA started out as the Southern California Newscasters Association. Laurie Fernandez is an American television news videographer and editor based in Los Angeles, California. She is a news videographer, editor and live truck engineer for television stations, KCBS 2 and KCAL 9 in Los Angeles. Early life and education Laurie Fernandez was born in New York City, New York and grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Fernandez holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications and Photography from the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. Career Fernandez began her television career at station WKBT in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where she was also the first female master control engineer. Sam Chu Lin
Samuel Chu-Lin (; c. 1939 – March 5, 2006) was an American journalist. Career and contributions Born in Greenville, Mississippi, Sam Chu-Lin began his career in broadcasting began when he hosted a 1956 radio show in his hometown. He used the name "Sammy Lin," which helped him as many people did not identify this name with an Asian. He later became known for his deep baritone voice. He had wanted to speak without his Southern twang and practiced by listening late at night to CBS Radio's Edward R. Murrow. Chu-Lin's hard work and dedication brought him to Phoenix, New York City, San Francisco, and finally Los Angeles. In the 1960s, Chu-Lin led the way for Chinese Americans in broadcast journalism, being one of only three Asian Americans. Bill Bertka (born August 8, 1927) is a current basketball consultant/special assistant and a former National Basketball Association (NBA) assistant coach, scout and executive with the Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Jazz. A pioneering proponent of film study, advance scouting, player development and basketball analytics, Bertka has spent more than 50 years in the NBA and has been a part of 10 NBA championships with the Lakers, including seven as an assistant coach. Richard Beebe
Richard Paul Beebe (December 5, 1929 – August 29, 1998) was an American radio personality who was on the air for five decades in Los Angeles and won two Golden Mike Awards. A journalist at KRLA 1110, he became a founding member of The Credibility Gap. His experience and wit were key to most versions of the group. He became the link between the original and more famous later lineups when we was joined by Harry Shearer, David L. Lander, and Michael McKean, all much younger than he. He left the Gap in 1975. Some of their early work can be heard at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles and New York City. Beebe performed the voice of Dewey Phillips on the ''Pop Chronicles'' documentary. Carlos Amezcua is a journalist best known for his sixteen years as the original co-anchor for the ''KTLA Morning News'', with Barbara Beck as his co-anchor, Mark Kriski handling weather and Sam Rubin reporting on the entertainment industry. Airing at 5:00 am, the crew became comfortable and humor crept into the newscasts. Managing executive Steve Bell described the show as, "the first one with the crazy anchors".
