''Golden Boy of the Blue Ridge'' is a musical based on the Irish classic ''Playboy of the Western World'' by John Millington Synge. The music was written by Peter Mills with a book by Peter Mills and Cara Reichel. The story has been transplanted from rural Ireland to 1930s Appalachia and set to a bluegrass-flavored score. Edmund John Millington Synge (; 16 April 1871 – 24 March 1909) was an Irish playwright, poet, writer, collector of folklore, and a key figure in the Irish Literary Revival. His best known play ''The Playboy of the Western World'' was poorly received, due to its bleak ending, depiction of Irish peasants, and idealisation of parricide, leading to hostile audience reactions and riots in Dublin during its opening run at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, which he had co-founded with W. Bluegrass music is a genre of American roots music that developed in the 1940s in the Appalachian region of the United States.
