Gold Cup At Santa Anita Stakes
The Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes is a Grade I American thoroughbred horse race for horses age three and older over a distance of miles on the dirt held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California in May. The race currently offers a purse of $400,000. History Early beginnings The race inaugurated in 1938 at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California as the Hollywood Gold Cup. Hollywood Park Racetrack opened its doors on June 10, 1938, and Seabiscuit, under jockey George Woolf, won the $50,000 added race's inaugural running on July 16. The race was not run in 1942 or 1943, due to Hollywood Park being closed and used as an airplane parts storage depot during World War II. Post World War II In 1949, the Hollywood Gold Cup, as well as the entire 1949 meeting, was held at Santa Anita Park, due to a devastating fire at Hollywood Park on the night of May 5, 1949. Cigar (April 18, 1990 – October 7, 2014), was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was the 1995 and 1996 American Horse of the Year. He was the first American racehorse racing against top-class competition to win 16 consecutive races since Triple Crown winner Citation did so between 1948 and 1950. Sandpit (1989–2003) was a Brazilian Champion Thoroughbred racehorse that also met with considerable success racing in the United States. In a career that lasted from 1992 until 1997, he ran forty times and won fourteen races. Background Sandpit was bred by Rio de Janeiro banker Sergio Coutinho de Menezes at Haras São José da Serra in Paraná, who raced him under the name, Sierra Thoroughbreds. Siphon (foaled November 11, 1991) is a Brazilian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and multiple G1-winner in Brazil and the United States. Background Siphon was bred by and foaled in 1991. He was sired by the champion Itajara, who is considered by many to be the best Brazilian racehorse of all time. Siphon's dam is Ebrea, from the family of one of the founding mares of Haras São José e Expedictus. Gentlemen (foaled 1992) is an Argentinian Thoroughbred racehorse. He was the Champion Three-Year-Old Colt in Argentina and then raced successfully in the United States. Background Gentlemen is a chestnut horse bred at the Haras de la Pomme in Argentina. He was sired by Robin des Bois, an American-bred, French-trained son of Nureyev. Skip Away (April 4, 1993 – May 14, 2010), was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who was the 1998 Horse of the Year, 1996 Champion Three-Year-Old, and 1997 and 1998 Champion Handicap Horse. He won 10 Grade One races for $9,616,360 in prize money. Breeding Bred by Anna Marie Barnhart, Skip Away was foaled and reared at Hilmer Schmidt's Indian Hill Farm in Florida. Malek was a Chilean-bred racehorse. He raced with considerable success in South America before being exported to the United States where he recorded his biggest win in the 1998 Santa Anita Handicap. Background Malek was a bay horse with a stripebred in Chile by the Haras Mocito Guapo. He was sired by the Argentinian stallion Mocito Guapo, a grandson of the American champion Nashua, out of the locally bred mare Condegnita. Real Quiet (March 7, 1995 – September 27, 2010) was an American Champion Thoroughbred racehorse. He was nicknamed "The Fish" by his trainer due to his narrow frame. He is best remembered for winning the first two legs of American Triple Crown: the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. His loss in the third leg, the Belmont Stakes, was the smallest margin of defeat ever at only four inches. He was bred by Eduardo Gaviria, a Colombian proprietor of two stud farms: one near Bogotá in Colombia and another, Little Hill Farm, in Ocala, Florida, where Real Quiet was foaled. Aptitude (foaled March 27, 1997) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse, winner of the 2001 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Career Aptitude's first race was on October 21, 1999, where he came in 6th place. On January 1, 2000, he won his first race at Santa Anita Park. He finished in 2nd place at both the 2000 Kentucky Derby and the 2000 Belmont Stakes. On July 1, 2001, he won his first Grade 1 race, the Hollywood Gold Cup. He followed that victory up with a win on August 19, 2001, at the Saratoga Breeders' Cup Handicap.
