''Godzilla'' is a 2014 American monster film directed by Gareth Edwards (director), Gareth Edwards. It is a reboot of Toho's Godzilla (franchise), ''Godzilla'' franchise, the 30th film in the ''Godzilla'' franchise, the first film in Legendary Entertainment, Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse, and the second ''Godzilla'' film to be completely produced by a Hollywood studio. The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, and Bryan Cranston. In the film, an American soldier attempts to return to his family while caught in the crossfire of an ancient rivalry between Godzilla (MonsterVerse), Godzilla and two parasitic monsters known as MUTOs. The project began as an IMAX short film in 2004 but was transferred to Legendary in 2009 to be redeveloped as a feature film. Gareth James Edwards (born 13 July 1975) is a British filmmaker. He first gained widespread recognition for ''Monsters'' (2010), an independent film in which he served as writer, director, cinematographer, and visual effects artist. He subsequently directed ''Godzilla'' (2014), a reboot of Toho's ''Godzilla'' franchise and the first film in Legendary's MonsterVerse, and '' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story'' (2016), the first installment of the ''Star Wars'' anthology series and an immediate prequel to '' Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope'' (1977). Career Gareth Edwards was born on 13 July 1975 in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. He is of Welsh parentage.
