Gobi Jerboa
The Gobi jerboa (''Allactaga bullata'') is a species of rodent in the family Dipodidae. It is found in China and Mongolia. Its natural habitats are temperate grassland and temperate desert. The Gobi jerboa was discovered in 1925 by Glover Morrill Allen. It is found in the Gobi Desert located in northern and northwestern China, as well as in southern Mongolia, and is considered to be the most “desert loving” out of all Gobi rodents (Smith and Xie 2008). Allen first examined an adult male Gobi jerboa from Tsagan Nor, Outer Mongolia, which was collected on July 5, 1922 by the Central Asiatic Expeditions and housed at the American Museum of Natural History (Allen 1925). Allen further compared the subspecies ''Allactaga sibirica annulata'' and ''Allactaga sibirica sibirica'', to the Gobi jerboa because they are all sympatric. Glover Morrill Allen
Glover Morrill Allen (February 8, 1879 – February 14, 1942) was an American zoology, zoologist. He was born at Walpole, New Hampshire, the son of Reverend Nathaniel Glover Allen and Harriet Ann (Schouler) Allen, and studied at Harvard University. While still a student, Allen published ''The Birds of Massachusetts'' and ''A List of the Birds of New Hampshire''. After graduating in 1901, he was appointed librarian to the Boston Society of Natural History, and in 1904, obtained a Ph.D. from Harvard. From 1924, he lectured in zoology at Harvard and held the position of Curator of Mammals in the Museum of Comparative Zoology. He traveled widely, to Central and South America, to East and West Africa, the Nile, the Belgian Congo as a member of the eight-man Harvard Medical African Expedition (1926–1927), and Australia as a member of the six-man Harvard Australian Expedition (1931–1932) along with his student, Ralph Nicholson Ellis. The genus ''Allactaga'' contains the four and five-toed jerboas of Asia. They are small mammals belonging to the order of rodents. They are characteristically known as the hopping rodents of the desert and semi-arid regions. They have long hind feet, short forelimbs, and walk upright. They have large ears in comparison to their body size and a large tail. The tail assists and serves as support when the jerboa is standing upright.
