Goapele
Goapele Mohlabane (; born July 11, 1977), is an American soul and R&B singer-songwriter. Her name means ''to move forward'' in Setswana, a Southern African language. Early life Goapele's South African father Douglas Mohlabane was an exiled political activist who struggled against the Apartheid System. Goapele's New York-born Israeli Jewish mother Noa had been attending protests since the age of 12. Noa attended Friends World College and was studying in Nairobi, Kenya, where she met and married Douglas. Goapele and her older brother DJ Namane Mohlabane were raised in a California South African exile community. Both of her parents inspired Goapele to become very involved in community affairs at a young age. She attended the Berkeley Arts Magnet School, where she led a pre-teen peer-support group. ''Change It All'' is the third studio album by American singer–songwriter Goapele. It was released in 2005. This album was composed of all-new material and was a forward step in her development as an artist, which was a great expansion in range from her previous effort. However, the much older song "Closer" was included as a bonus track after a gap of silence of 1:15 that occurred between the last two tracks. Guests included Clyde Carson from the Team and Dwele, while Mumia Abu-Jamal appeared in an interviewed voice-over on "Fly Away". Decon'' is a New York-based creative studio that houses production, creative, strategy, and music divisions. The company creates campaigns on behalf of brands and advertising agencies. History Originally named Deconstruction Company, the company was founded in 2002 by Peter Bittenbender and Jason Goldwatch after the creation of their award-winning hip-hop documentary and accompanying soundtrack, ''One Big Trip''. ''Closer'' is the debut studio album of R&B singer-songwriter Goapele Mohlabane. It was self-released in a strictly limited run, only available at select brick-and-mortar outlets and Web sites throughout the United States. After 5,000 copies sold independently, she released a longer album through Hieroglyphics Imperium that got noticed by Columbia Records, which picked up that album for worldwide distribution, added several tracks, and signed her to a contract through Skyblaze Recordings, her family-owned imprint. The catalog number is an in-joke reference to her birthday and initials of her name. Several songs on this album were rerecorded for their inclusion on the follow-up album, and it is the only album on which the song "You" (a different composition from the song of the same name on ''Change it All'') is available. Hieroglyphics, also known as the Hieroglyphics Crew and Hiero, is an American underground hip hop collective based in Oakland, California. The collective was founded in the early- 1990s by rapper Del the Funky Homosapien. The collective is currently composed of rappers Del the Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, producer/manager Domino, DJ Toure, and the four individual members of the rap group Souls of Mischief: Phesto, A-Plus, Opio, and Tajai.
