Goalball At The 2008 Summer Paralympics
Goalball at the 2008 Summer Paralympics was held in the Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium from September 7 to September 14. The competition consisted of men's and women's team events, and what had been billed as one of the most open tournaments certainly lived up to expectations. In the women's gold medal game, the lead changed hands five times, with the USA outlasting China by a score of 6–5, with never more than one goal in it. The winning goal came from Asya Miller with less than a minute to go. The gold medal in the men's game was even more dramatic. Lithuania, the current world champions, took advantage of a clutch of penalties in the first half to jump ahead of China by 6 goals to 2 at the half, and looked to be holding on despite a steady comeback. With only 50 seconds on the clock, the Chinese were two goals behind (6–8) but managed to overturn the deficit with three goals in 30 seconds to take the gold 9–8, sending the packed BIT Gymnasium into rapture. Fan Feifei (, born 1 September 1989) is a Chinese retired goalball player. She won a silver medal at both the 2008 Summer Paralympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Fan had congenital cataract, a kind of visual impairment. She began playing goalball when she was 10 years old; just a year later she helped her province Shandong win a bronze medal at the National Para Games, at the age of 11. Donations poured in after her story was publicized, and she has since gained 20/200 vision through a cataract surgery in Shanghai. Asya Miller
Asya Miller Lapper (born October 16, 1979) is a five-time Paralympic medalist, with four of her medals coming in goalball. Miller was nominated for an ESPY Award in 2009. Miller made her Paralympic debut in 2000 and won a bronze medal for discus at the Sydney Paralympic Games. In goalball, Miller and teammate Lisa Czechowski competed in their sixth Paralympics together at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. Together they have won four Paralympic medals, including gold at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. Her visual impairment is caused by Stargardt disease. Lisa Banta
Lisa Czechowski (née Banta, born May 29, 1979, in New Jersey) is an American goalball player. Her Paralympic debut won her a silver medal for discus at the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games; she also competed in goalball at those games. In December 2001 she took part in the torch relay for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Czechowski and teammate Asya Miller competed in their sixth Paralympics together at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. Together they have won four Paralympic medals, including gold at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. She was born with nystagmus and diagnosed with cone dystrophy while in middle school, both conditions affecting her vision. In high school, she tried various track and field events, eventually moving to shot put and discus. She first became involved with goalball in 1995. Jen Armbruster
Jennifer "Jen" Armbruster (born February 12, 1975 in Taipei) is an American goalball player. She was married to fellow teammate Asya Miller.Her wife is Jackie Bower whom she shares a son and 3 other children with. Armbruster began losing her vision at 14, but continued to play in her school's basketball team when the sight progressed to the point of being legally blind. She later lost her vision completely and therefore did not join the military like her father. Instead she found success in goalball and played at the 1992 Summer Paralympics and several Paralympic Games since. She has won a gold medal.
