"Go West Young Man" was a 1940 song by Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby written for the MGM film '' Go West'', originally sung by Groucho Marx, backed by a chorus, who performed solo for the first time in the song. The song was cut from the film. The song was eventually used in the 1947 United Artists film '' Copacabana'' when it was sung again by Groucho. He and Bing Crosby dueted on the song on Crosby's ''Philco Radio Time'' show on February 12, 1947. Julius Henry "Groucho" Marx (; October 2, 1890 – August 19, 1977) was an American comedian, actor, writer, stage, film, radio, singer, television star and vaudeville performer. ''Go West Young Man'' is a compilation album of songs on one 10" vinyl record by Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters released in 1950 featuring songs that were sung by Crosby and the Sisters with a Western-type genre. This album is one of the first by Crosby to not be released on 78 rpm records before going straight to an LP or set of 45s. The album includes several songs which had already enjoyed Billboard chart success. “Along the Navajo Trail” reached the No. 2 position in 1945 and "One Hundred and Sixty Acres", "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?" and "Quicksilver" also charted. Reception The album itself was not reviewed but Billboard commented favorably on several of the tracks when they were issued as singles. Dick Charles (born Richard Charles Krieg; February 24, 1919 in Newark, New Jersey – July 17, 1998) was an American songwriter. Career His education ended with high school graduation, after which he worked in a Newark photography store as a clerk while engaged in piano playing, arranging, harmony, and composition. During that period he sang in a number of amateur contests. He then became a page at NBC Studios in New York City. Besides being a songwriter, he served as a director of Citadel Media, ABC Radio for ten years, produced and directed the Paul Whiteman radio program, and was responsible for creating a number of network programs. In 1954 he started his own recording service. Lawrence Wolcott Markes (September 24, 1921 – May 19, 1999) was an American comedian, singer and screenwriter. Markes was born in Brooklyn, New York, and decided at an early age to become a writer. Soon after graduating from the University of Miami, he started setting lyrics to the melody of another young songwriter, Dick Charles. Their first hit was "Mad About Him, Sad About Him, How Can I Be Glad Without Him Blues" (1942), which Dinah Shore recorded successfully for Columbia Records. During World War II, Markes was in the US Army Air Forces. He left the service in 1945, returning to New York and his songwriting collaboration with Charles. They wrote " Along the Navajo Trail", with Eddie De Lange, which was recorded by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters, Dinah Shore and the Gene Krupa Band. ''Philco Radio Time'' was an old-time radio radio series starring entertainer Bing Crosby. The series ran over ABC Radio with episodes airing from October 16, 1946–June 1, 1949.
