SS ''Gneisenau'' was a Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL) ocean liner that was launched and completed in 1935. Like several other German ships of the same name, she was named after the Prussian '' Generalfeldmarschall'' and military reformer August Neidhardt von Gneisenau (1760–1831). Construction and career ''Gneisenau'' was the second of three sister ships built for NDL, with the other ships being the ''Potsdam'' (later ''Empire Fowey'') and the . DeSchiMAG of Bremen, Germany, built ''Gneisenau''. ''Gneisenau'' was launched at Bremen on 17 May 1935. ''Gneisenau''s maiden voyage began on 3 January 1936. Until the outbreak of World War II, she worked NDL's express service between Bremen and the Far East. At she was among the fastest ships on the route. August Neidhardt Von Gneisenau
August Wilhelm Antonius Graf Neidhardt von Gneisenau (27 October 176023 August 1831) was a Prussian field marshal. He was a prominent figure in the reform of the Prussian military and the War of Liberation. Early life Gneisenau was born at Schildau in the Electorate of Saxony. He was the son of a Saxon lieutenant of artillery, August William Neidhardt, and his wife Maria Eva Neidhardt, née Müller. He grew up in great poverty at Schildau, and subsequently at Würzburg and Erfurt. In 1777 he entered the University of Erfurt, but two years later joined an Austrian regiment quartered there. In 1782, taking the additional name of ''Gneisenau'' from some lost estates of his family in Austria, he entered as an officer the service of the Margrave of Bayreuth-Ansbach. With one of that prince's mercenary regiments in British pay, he saw active service and gained valuable experience in the American Revolutionary War. A naval mine is a self-contained explosive device placed in water to damage or destroy surface ships or submarines. Unlike depth charges, mines are deposited and left to wait until they are triggered by the approach of, or contact with, any vessel or a particular vessel type, akin to anti-infantry vs. anti-vehicle mines. Sampson Low (18 November 1797 – 16 April 1886) was a bookseller and publisher in London in the 19th century. Early years Born in London in 1797, he was the son of Sampson Low, printer and publisher, of Berwick Street, Soho.
