Gnaviyani Atoll
Gnaviyani Atoll (Pronounced: Nyaviyani) is one of the administrative divisions of the Maldives corresponding to the natural atoll, Fuvahmulah. Surfacewise this is the smallest administrative unit in the Maldives, situated in the Equatorial Channel (Addu - Mulah Kandu) between Huvadhu Atoll and Addu Atoll. Geography The atoll of Fuvahmulah corresponding to this administrative division is the 25th natural atoll of the Maldives. Some people due to lack of knowledge or as part of a prevailing misconception erroneously mention that Fuvahmulah is not an atoll. An island of coral that encircles a lagoon partially or completely is what we call an atoll. Atolls Of The Maldives
The Maldives are formed by 20 natural atolls, along with a few islands and isolated reefs today which form a pattern stretching from 7 degrees 10′ North to 0 degrees 45′ South. The largest of these atolls is Boduthiladhunmathi, while the atoll containing the most islands is Huvadhu. Some atolls are in the form of a number of islands by time and in the form of isolated reefs, which could be classified as smaller atoll formations. All land above the surface in the Maldives is of coralline origin. The atolls of the Maldives form a quite regular chain and, especially in the northern and central atolls, an arrayed structure is apparent. There are broad and deep channels in between some atolls. Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll
Gaafu Dhaalu (also known as Southern Huvadhu Atoll or Huvadhu Atholhu Dhekunuburi, ހުވަދުއަތޮޅު ދެކުނުބުރި) is an administrative district of the Maldives formed by the southwestern section of Huvadhu Atoll. It was created on February 8, 1962 when Huvadhu Atoll was divided into two districts. Gaafu Dhaalu corresponds to the Southwestern section of this large natural atoll, south of the line extending between the channels of Footukandu and Vaarulu Kandu. The capital of this region is Thinadhoo ( Thenadhoo ). There are 153 islands in this district, 10 of which are inhabited. This district is located about 340 kilometers south of the capital Malé. Thaana, Taana or Tāna ( ) is the present writing system of the Maldivian language spoken in the Maldives. Funādo
Funaadu is an administrative division of Fuvahmulah, Maldives. This is one of the largest wards in Fuvahmulah. The origin of its name lies in some large groves of the tree known locally as "Funa" (Calophyllum inophyllum) that were located on its southern end. Miskiymagu is an administrative division of Fuvahmulah, Maldives. The former Dhashokubaa village was merged with Miskimmago. Dūndigan
Dhoondigan is an administrative division of Fuvahmulah, Maldives. It is the most populous district and the second largest by area. This ward lies in the Southeastern corner of the island sharing borders with Mālegan and Funaadu. Economy The harbour and airport of Fuvahmulah is located in Dhoondigan. It also has a large marsh land area shared with Funaadu and Maalegan. In addition to that it also had a large area with many coconut trees and vegetation which was cleared to construct the airport in Fuvahmulah. Maalegan is an administrative division of Fuvahmulah, Maldives. This ward stretches along the island fringe facing the northeast sharing borders with Mādhado, Miskimmago, Funādo and Dūndigan. Maadhadu is an administrative division of Fuvahmulah, Maldives. With the changes it has encountered over time, this is today the smallest district in Fuvahmulah. Hōdhado
Hoadhadu is an administrative division of Fuvahmulah, Maldives. The district shares borders with Dhadimagu, Dhiguvaandu and Maadhadu. Hoadhadu has been the smallest district in Fuvahmulah throughout history. During the late 20th century, the increase in population of the district led to pressure on land in the neighbouring areas. This led to a northern extension of the village, resulting in land from Dhadimagu and Dhiguvaandu wards being claimed to the village. Though this has resulted in a change of the believed-to-be areas in a disputed state, no formal changes have been made and area claims of different views exist. History Hoadhadu is the first district in Fuvahmulah to have accepted Islam.
