A gloss is a brief notation, especially a marginal one or an interlinear one, of the meaning of a word or wording in a text. It may be in the language of the text or in the reader's language if that is different. A collection of glosses is a ''glossary.'' A collection of medieval legal glosses, made by glossators, is called an ''apparatus''. The compilation of glosses into glossaries was the beginning of lexicography, and the glossaries so compiled were in fact the first dictionaries. In modern times a glossary, as opposed to a dictionary, is typically found in a text as an appendix of specialized terms that the typical reader may find unfamiliar. Also, satirical explanations of words and events are called glosses. ''Gloss'' (russian: Глянец, Glyanets) is a 2007 Russian satirical melodrama directed by Andrei Konchalovsky. The picture opened the 2007 Kinotavr film festival, and was part of the competition program. Plot Galya, a young worker in a provincial factory, dreams of becoming a successful model. One day she leaves her alcoholic parents together with her violent boyfriend and goes to Moscow. She ends up getting hired by a great couturier as a seamstress. During one of their shows, she walks the runway as a model, which causes her to be fired on the spot. Then, seemingly by chance, she becomes the assistant of the owner of a highly exclusive matchmaking agency, which arranges marriages for rich men with the most beautiful models in Moscow. Global Sea Level Observing System
Established in 1985, The Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS) is an Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission program whose purpose is to measure sea level globally for long-term climate change studies. The program's purpose has changed since the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and the program now collects real time measurements of sea level. The project is currently upgrading the over 290 stations it currently runs, so that they can send real time data via satellite to newly set up national tsunami centres. They are also fitting the stations with solar panels so they can continue to operate even if the mains power supply is interrupted by severe weather. Molly Gloss (born November 20, 1944) is an American writer of historical fiction and science fiction. Life Gloss grew up in rural Oregon and began writing seriously when she became a mother. She now lives in Portland, Oregon, and was close friends with fellow science fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin. She has taught writing and literature of the Western United States, American West at Portland State University, and served as visiting professor at Pacific University's low-residency MFA in Writing program. ''Gloss'' is a television drama series in New Zealand that screened from 1987 to 1990. The series was about the lives of the rich, famous and fashionable people involved with a fashion magazine owned by the Redfern family. It was a starting point for many actors who went on to many productions in New Zealand, Australia and around the world including Temuera Morrison, Miranda Harcourt, Peter Elliott, Lisa Chappell, Danielle Cormack and Kevin Smith. Sickle-gloss, or sickle sheen, is a silica residue found on blades such as sickles and scythes suggesting that they have been used to cut the silica-rich stems of cereals and forming an indirect proof for incipient agriculture.
