Gloria Schaffer
Gloria Wilinski Schaffer (born October 3, 1930) is an American politician who served as Secretary of the State of Connecticut from 1971 to 1978. A Democrat from New London, she served in the Connecticut State Senate from 1959 to 1971. She attended The Williams School and Sarah Lawrence College and ran for the United States Senate in 1976. Life and career Schaffer won election to the Connecticut State Senate from the 14th Senate District in 1958, serving six terms (1959–1971). She chaired the state senate's education committee. She won election as Secretary of the State of Connecticut in 1970 and served two terms from 1971 to 1978. In 1976 she ran for U.S. Senator in Connecticut but lost by a wide margin to Republican incumbent Lowell Weicker. She was the only woman to win a major party nomination for the US Senate in 1976. Branford College
Branford College is one of the 14 residential colleges at Yale University. Founding Branford College was founded in 1933 by partitioning the Memorial Quadrangle (built in 1917-21) into two parts: Saybrook and Branford. According to Robert Frost, it is "the oldest and most beautiful" of the Yale residential colleges, though it shares a building and was founded simultaneously with Saybrook. Anthony John Moffett, Jr. (born August 18, 1944) is a former American politician from the state of Connecticut. A Democrat, Moffett served in the United States House of Representatives as the member from Connecticut's 6th congressional district from 1975 to 1983. Classes Of United States Senators
The 100 seats in the United States Senate are divided into three classes for the purpose of determining which seats will be up for election in any two-year cycle, with only one class being up for election at a time. With senators being elected to fixed terms of six years, the classes allow about a third of the seats to be up for election in any presidential or midterm election year instead of having all 100 be up for election at the same time every six years. The seats are also divided in such a way that any given state's two senators are in different classes so that each seat's term ends in different years.
