Global Feminisms
''Global Feminisms'' was a feminist art exhibition that originally premiered at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum, New York City, United States, in March 2007. ''Global Feminisms'' was the first international exhibition exclusively dedicated to feminist art from 1990 to present. The exhibition was co-curated by Maura Reilly and Linda Nochlin and consists of work by 88 women artists from 62 countries. ''Global Feminisms'' showcased work in all media forms, including painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, installation, and performance, with a focus on contemporary feminist art from a global perspective. Feminist Art
Feminist art is a category of art associated with the late 1960s and 1970s feminist movement. Feminist art highlights the societal and political differences women experience within their lives. The hopeful gain from this form of art is to bring a positive and understanding change to the world, in hope to lead to equality or liberation. Media used range from traditional art forms such as painting to more unorthodox methods such as performance art, conceptual art, body art, craftivism, video, film, and fiber art. Feminist art has served as an innovative driving force towards expanding the definition of art through the incorporation of new media and a new perspective. N'Goné Fall
N'Goné Fall (born 1967) is a Senegalese curator, editor, cultural consultant and academic. She has been appointed General Commissioner of "Season Africa 2020", a French initiative to view the world from an African perspective. From 1994 to 2001, she edited ''Revue Noire'', an African contemporary art magazine. She has served as a consultant to governments on cultural policies and has curated cultural exhibitions in Africa, Europe and the United States. Biography Born in Dakar, Senegal, in 1967, N'Goné Fall studied architecture under Paul Virilio (1932–2018) at the École Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris, graduating when she was 26. Rebecca Belmore
Rebecca Belmore D.F.A. (born 1960) is an interdisciplinary Anishinaabekwe artist who is notable for politically conscious and socially aware performance and installation work. She is Ojibwe and member of Obishikokaang (Lac Seul First Nation). Belmore currently lives in Toronto, Ontario. Belmore has performed and exhibited nationally and internationally since 1986. Her work focuses on issues of place and identity, and confronts challenges for First Nations People. Her work addresses history, voice and voicelessness, place, and identity. Her work, be it sculpture, video or photographic in nature, is performance-based. Anna Baumgart
Anna Baumgart (born 1966) is a Polish artist, best known for her large installation pieces and film. She is based in Warsaw. While she covers many different issues in her works, "all of them share a preoccupation with repression." Her works are in the permanent collections of several Polish museums. Fiona Banner
Fiona Banner (born 1966), also known as The Vanity Press is a British artist. Her work encompasses sculpture, drawing, installation and text, and demonstrates a long-standing fascination with the emblem of fighter aircraft and their role within culture and especially as presented on film. She is well known for her early works in the form of 'wordscapes', written transcriptions of the frame-by-frame action in Hollywood war films, including Top Gun and Apocalypse Now. Arahmaiani (Arahmayani Feisal; born May 21, 1961) is an Indonesian artist born in Bandung and based in Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. Arahmaiani is considered by many to be one of the most respected and iconic contemporary artists, specifically in pioneering performance art in Southeast Asia. Emmanuelle is the lead character in a series of French erotic films based on the main character in the novel ''Emmanuelle'' (1959), created by Emmanuelle Arsan. Ghada Amer ( ar, غادة عامر, May 22 1963 in Cairo, Egypt) is a contemporary artist, much of her work deals with issues of gender and sexuality. Her most notable body of work involves highly layered embroidered paintings of women's bodies referencing pornographic imagery. Amer had previously emigrated from Egypt to France at the age of 11 and was educated in Paris and Nice. She is currently living and working in New York City. Pilar Albarracín (born September 27, 1968 in Sevilla, Spain) is a contemporary Spanish artist. Mequitta Ahuja (born 1976) is a Contemporary art, contemporary American Feminism, feminist Painting, painter of African Americans, African American and South Asian descent who lives in Baltimore, Maryland. Ahuja creates works of self-portraiture that combine themes of myth and legend with personal identity. Early life Mequitta Ahuja was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Indian and African-American parents, hailing from New Delhi and Cincinnati respectively. Lida Abdul
Lida Abdul is a video artist and performance artist from Afghanistan. She was born as Lida Abdullah in Kabul in 1979, fled the country as a child during the Soviet Invasion, and went on to live in India and Germany then the United States. Joan Kee
Joan Kee is an art historian specializing in modern and contemporary art. Her book, ''Contemporary Korean Art: Tansaekhwa and the Urgency of Method'', published by University of Minnesota Press in 2013, is credited with sparking global interest in Dansaekhwa, a major constellation of abstract paintings produced in South Korea from the 1960s. In 2014, she curated ''From All Sides: Tansaekhwa and the Urgency of Method'', a group show of representative Tansaekhwa artists that was widely acclaimed.
