Global Battle Of The Bands
The Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) is a live music competition joined by bands from all continents around the world. It is open to amateur/professional bands of all music genres and ages; there are only two main prerequisites to joining: no cover songs and no pre-recorded tracks. All bands must play original compositions and play it live. Every year Local Qualifying Heats and National Finals take place in participating countries around the world. The winners of these go forward to the World Finals. The grand winner of the World Finals will be awarded a USD $100,000.00 worth of cash and band development packages in London, as well as a golden statuette engraved with the words "Best New Band in the World". Starting in 2004 with 16 countries participating, 25 countries took part in 2006 and participation continues to grow in 2007 to 2010 with a frequent average of over 30 countries involved. London Astoria
The London Astoria was a music venue at 157 Charing Cross Road, in London, England. Originally a warehouse during the 1920s, the building became a cinema and ballroom. It was converted for use as a theatre in the 1970s. After further development, the building re-opened in the mid-1980s, as a night club and live music venue for well-known musical acts. There are half a dozen clubs and smaller music venues in the adjacent buildings. In 2009 the venue closed, and was demolished as part of the development plans of the Crossrail project. The venue is still seen today as having been an iconic music establishment, as it helped to launch the careers of many British rock bands and also played a part in the UK success of many international acts. Electric Ballroom
The Electric Ballroom is a 1,500-capacity performance venue (primarily for rock bands) and indoor market located at 184 Camden High Street in Camden Town, London, England. History The Electric Ballroom started as an Irish ballroom in the 1930s, renamed as Electric Ballroom in the summer of 1978 and owned by Bill Fuller, up until his death in 2008, aged 91. Scala (club)
Scala is a former cinema turned nightclub and live music venue in Pentonville Road, London, England, near King's Cross railway station. History The Scala was originally built as a cinema to the designs of H Courtney Constantine, but construction was interrupted by the First World War and it spent some time being used to manufacture aircraft parts, and as a labour exchange for demobilised troops before opening in 1920 as the King's Cross Cinema. The cinema changed hands and names several times through its life and also changed focus, ranging from mainstream to art-house to adult film over 70 years, as well as spending a short time as a primatarium. In the summer of 1972, the King's Cross Cinema played host to the only UK concert by Iggy & The Stooges, who were in London recording the album ''Raw Power''. Astro hitz, formerly known as HITZ.TV was a Malaysian music video channel provided by Astro. It made its début on 20 October 2003 and serves as a visual entertainment complement of hitz.fm, which is under Astro's radio management arm, AMP Radio Networks (now Astro Radio). Before the channel renumbering on 1 October 2007, the channel broadcasts on channel 16, while broadcasting on channel 705 when the channel renumbering takes effect. Kopek (band)
Kopek were an Irish rock band from Dublin, Ireland composed of Daniel Jordan (guitar, vocals), Brad Kinsella (bass, vocals) and Eoin Ryan (drums). History Formation and early gigs Original drummer Shane Cooney and bassist Brad Kinsella grew up as next-door neighbors in Dublin, and shared a love of classic and modern rock music. The first singer who answered their ad in a local musician's magazine was Daniel Jordan from Ashbourne, and from there the band Bloom was born, although they subsequently took on the name Kopek. Early gigs around Dublin included many battle of the bands contests, which the trio won regularly. From 2002 to 2009, Kopek toured and continued to win competitions around the world. Boys In A Band
Boys in a Band are an indie rock band from the Faroe Islands. Formed in 2006 in Gøta, the group comprises vocalist/guitarist Pætur Zachariasson, guitarist Heini, bassist Símun Sakaris, drummer The Rógvi, and Heri Schwartz on hammond organ. The band members claim to play ''Cowboy Rock''. They are the winners of Global Battle of the Bands (2007) (GBOB). History 2006 Boys in a Band formed in September 2006. Dubtonic Kru are a live reggae band from Jamaica. After earning the title "Best New Band in the World 2010 - 2011" at the Global Battle of the Bands international contest and many other achievements, they performed in Ostróda. ''Firekind'' was a comics strip published in the British weekly anthology comic '' 2000 AD'' for 13 issues in 1993. It was written by John Smith, with art by Paul Marshall. Publication history ''Firekind'' came about as part of the "Spring Fever" promotion at ''2000 AD'' after a change in distribution saw a big drop-off in sales. The assistant editor Alan McKenzie had contacted John Smith and suggested he might want to write a story involving dragons to make up for the lack of fantasy in the comic. According to Smith: The story was originally serialised in '' 2000 AD'' from issues #828 to #840. Part 7, however, which should have appeared in issue #834, was accidentally omitted. Stephen Alan Lillywhite, (born 15 March 1955) is a British record producer. Since he began his career in 1977, Lillywhite has been credited on over 500 records, and has collaborated with a variety of musicians including new wave acts XTC, Big Country, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Simple Minds, the Psychedelic Furs, Toyah, David Byrne, Talking Heads and Kirsty MacColl, as well as U2, the Rolling Stones, the Pogues, Blue October, Steel Pulse, the La's, Peter Gabriel, Morrissey, the Killers, Dave Matthews Band, Phish, Counting Crows and Joan Armatrading. Benjamin “Ben” Edward Stephen Adams (born 22 November 1981) is a British singer and songwriter from Ascot, England, best known as a member of the British-Norwegian boy band A1. Glen Matlock
Glen Matlock (born 27 August 1956) is an English musician, best known for being the bass guitarist in the original line-up of the punk rock band the Sex Pistols. He is credited as a songwriter on 10 of the 12 songs on the Sex Pistols' only album, '' Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols'', although he had left the band early in the recording process, credited as bassist and backing vocalist on only two songs on the album, " Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save The Queen".
