Glenwood, Washington County, Oregon
Glenwood is an unincorporated community in Washington County, Oregon, United States, northwest of Forest Grove on Oregon Route 6. The name Glenwood was first used for this locale around 1880. The post office was established in 1886 as "Glenwood", although it was not always in the same location. In the 1920s, the Gales Creek and Wilson River Railroad had a terminal station nearby named "Aagaard" (or "Aagard") after Olaf B. Aagaard, owner of the Aagaard Lumber Company. The Gales Creek Logging Company also operated a site at or near this original mill. The name of the station was soon changed to Glenwood to match the post office. Multiple lumber companies operated in this area and one of these operations is thought to have been a possible cause of the start of the first Tillamook Burn fires. Brooks, Oregon
Brooks is an unincorporated community in Marion County, Oregon, United States. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Brooks as a census-designated place (CDP). The census definition of the area may not precisely correspond to local understanding of the area with the same name. As of the 2010 census the population was 398. Brooks is part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located about nine miles north of Salem near Oregon Route 99E on French Prairie. History Brooks was a station on the Southern Pacific Railroad main line (now the Union Pacific) through the Willamette Valley. The station was named for early settler Linus Brooks, who came to Oregon from Illinois in 1850. He was born in Ohio in 1805. Powerland Heritage Park, formerly known as Antique Powerland, is a collection of museums and a self-described heritage site for power equipment, such as farm machinery, commercial trucks, trains, construction equipment, and the engines which power them. It is located in Brooks, Oregon, United States (near Salem, Oregon), and is operated by the non-profit Antique Powerland Museum Association. Gyppo Logger
A gyppo or gypo logger is a logger who runs or works for a small-scale logging operation that is independent from an established sawmill or lumber company. The gyppo system is one of two main patterns of historical organization of logging labor in the Pacific Northwest United States, the other being the "company logger". Gyppo loggers were originally condemned by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) as strikebreakers. After the founding of a government-sponsored company union, the Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen, weakened the influence of the IWW on the logging industry, attitudes towards gyppos changed, and they came to be seen by the victorious bosses and scabs as a normal component of the timber business in a less ideologically charged context. Consolidated Timber Company
Consolidated Timber Company was a lumber company that used to operate a large sawmill near Glenwood, Oregon from around 1936–46. History The Consolidated Timber Company was formed in response to the need to salvage the massive amount of lumber remaining after the initial Tillamook Burn fire in 1933. This would eventually end up being the largest salvage operation in American history. The original large fire was thought to have been caused by the operation of one of the original smaller companies that were located here. Access to the woods was difficult at the time as the original Astoria Military road had gone unmaintained and the Wilson River Highway had not been constructed yet. The original Wilson River road had fallen into disuse due to collapsed bridges and lack of funding. Tillamook Burn
The Tillamook Burn was a series of forest fires in the Northern Oregon Coast Range of Oregon in the United States that destroyed a total area of of old growth timber in what is now known as the Tillamook State Forest. There were four wildfires in this series, which spanned the years of 1933–1951. By association, the name Tillamook Burn also refers to the location of these fires. This event is an important part of Oregon's history. First fire (1933) The first fire started in a ravine at the headwaters of Gales Creek on August 14, 1933. The exact cause of the first fire is unknown; however, the common narrative states that as logging crews were wrapping up operations early due to fire hazard restrictions, a steel cable dragging a fallen Douglas fir rubbed against the dry bark of a wind-fallen snag.
