Glens Falls Stakes
The Glens Falls Stakes is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares aged four years old and older held over a distance of one and a half miles on the turf held annually in August at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. The event currently carries a purse of $250,000. History The event at Saratoga Race Course is named after the nearby city of Glens Falls, New York. The inaugural running of the event was on 9 August 1996 over a distance of miles for fillies and mares three-years-old and older and was won by the 17-1 longshot Ampulla who was ridden by Shane Sellers in a time of 2:16.49 by a two lengths margin. From 1998 to 2010 the event was run under handicap conditions. Saratoga Race Course
Saratoga Race Course is a Thoroughbred horse racing track located on Union Avenue in Saratoga Springs, New York, United States. Opened in 1863, it is often considered to be the oldest major sporting venue of any kind in the country, but is actually the fourth oldest racetrack in the US (after 3rd oldest Pleasanton Fairgrounds Racetrack, 2nd oldest Fair Grounds Race Course, and oldest Freehold Raceway). In 1857 the Empire Race Course was opened on an island in the Hudson River near Albany, but was in operation only a short time. The Saratoga meet originally lasted only four days. The meet has been lengthened gradually since that time. From 1962 to 1990, the meet lasted four weeks and began in late July or early August. In 2010, the meet expanded to 40 racing days, with races held five days per week. It lasts from mid-July through Labor Day in early September. John R. (born John Richbourg, August 20, 1910 - February 15, 1986) was an American radio disc jockey who attained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for playing rhythm and blues music on Nashville radio station WLAC. He was also a notable record producer and artist manager. Richbourg was arguably the most popular and charismatic of the four announcers at WLAC who showcased popular African-American music in nightly programs from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. Godolphin (Arabic: جودلفين) is the Maktoum family's private Thoroughbred horseracing stable and was named in honour of the Godolphin Arabian, who came from the desert to become one of the three founding stallions of the modern Thoroughbred.
