Glenays, also known as Leighton House, was an historic home which was located in Radnor Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. History and architectural features The property was purchased by Richard Roger Montgomery and his wife Elisabeth Binney Montgomery in 1859. It was a three-story, stucco over stone Italian Villa style dwelling built in three sections. The first section was built in 1859, with additions built in the late-nineteenth century and in 1925. The 1925 addition and 1928 garden walls were designed by architect George Howe (1886–1955). ''Note:'' This includes For many years, the estate was the home of Archibald R. Bryn Mawr, pronounced , from Welsh for big hill, is a census-designated place (CDP) located across three townships: Radnor Township and Haverford Township in Delaware County, and Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It is located just west of Philadelphia along Lancaster Avenue, also known as U.S. Route 30. Radnor Township, often called simply Radnor, is a first class township with home rule status in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2019 United States census estimate, the township population is 31,875. Radnor Township is the largest municipality in Delaware County by land area and the fourth-largest by population, following Upper Darby Township, Haverford Township, and Chester. George Howe (architect)
George Howe (1886–1955) was an American architect and educator, and an early convert to the International style. His personal residence, High Hollow (1914-1917), established the standard for house design in the Philadelphia region through the early 20th century. His partnership with William Lescaze yielded the design of Philadelphia's PSFS Building (1930–32), considered the first International style skyscraper built in the United States. Biography He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1886 to James and Helen Howe. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from Harvard in 1908, and graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in 1912. He worked for the Philadelphia firm of Furness, Evans & Co. from 1913 to 1916. In 1916, he joined the partnership of Walter Mellor & Arthur Ingersoll Meigs. Stucco or render is a construction material made of aggregates, a binder, and water. Stucco is applied wet and hardens to a very dense solid.
