Glen Ferris, West Virginia
Glen Ferris is a census-designated place (CDP) on the western bank of the Kanawha River in Fayette County, West Virginia, United States. It is situated approximately one mile south of the town of Gauley Bridge. The sole highway linking Glen Ferris to the area is U.S. Route 60, known also as the Midland Trail. As of the 2010 census, its population was 203; the community had 104 housing units, 87 of which were occupied. The village is roughly a mile and a half in length. Glen Ferris is home to two churches, one Apostolic and one Methodist. A railway owned by Norfolk Southern runs parallel to US Route 60 through the village. Kanawha River
The Kanawha River ( ) is a tributary of the Ohio River, approximately 97 mi (156 km) long, in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The largest inland waterway in West Virginia, its valley has been a significant industrial region of the state since early in the 19th century. It is formed at the town of Gauley Bridge in northwestern Fayette County, approximately 35 mi (56 km) SE of Charleston, by the confluence of the New and Gauley rivers. Camp Reynolds
Camp Reynolds was a World War II Army Camp from 1942 to 1946. Its original name was Shenango Personnel Replacement Depot (commonly referred to as Camp Shenango). On September 21, 1943 it was renamed Camp Reynolds after PA Civil War hero Major General John Fulton Reynolds who was killed on July 1st, the first day of the battle of Gettysburg. The camp was located in Pymatuning & Delaware Township in Mercer County, PA. In 1994, the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission placed a historical marker there to note the historic importance of the location. Kanawha Falls
Kanawha Falls is a waterfall on the Kanawha River in West Virginia that has been a barrier to fish movement for more than 1 million years. The waterfall is formed by a diagonal sandstone ledge across the river about downstream from the confluence of the New and Gauley rivers. It is high. A low concrete overflow dam built in 1920 along the crest of the falls directs part of the flow to an electric generating plant on the western (right) bank of the river at the community of Glen Ferris. The plant was rehabilitated beginning in 2010 and fully returned to operation in 2012. The community of Gauley Bridge is upstream from Glen Ferris along U.S. Route 60. Glen Ferris Inn
Glen Ferris Inn, also known as Stockton's Inn, Stockton's Tavern, and Hawkins's Hotel, is a historic hotel located on the bank of the Kanawha River overlooking Kanawha Falls at Glen Ferris, Fayette County, West Virginia. It may have been built as early as 1815. It is a "T"-shaped brick building in two sections. One section is a three-story, painted brick dwelling. The second is a two-story, red brick wing measuring 140 feet by 40 feet. The building features a wraparound porch supported by 13 stuccoed brick columns. In the 19th century, the building was a stagecoach stop and served as a Union quartermaster's depot during the American Civil War. In the first half of the 20th century, it housed managers, supervisors, and workers involved in developing the area's manufacturing and hydro-electric capacity. The Midland Trail, also called the Roosevelt Midland Trail, was a national auto trail spanning the United States from Washington, D.C. west to Los Angeles, California and San Francisco, California ('' though the Lincoln Highway guide published in 1916 states the original eastern terminus was in New York City'' ). Gauley Bridge is a town in Fayette County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 614 at the 2010 census. The Kanawha River is formed at Gauley Bridge by the confluence of the New and Gauley Rivers. Two miles to the southeast of Gauley Bridge, in Glen Ferris, is Kanawha Falls, a popular stopping point on Midland Trail Scenic Highway. The community was named after a bridge over the Gauley River near the original town site.
