Fred Glasse
Alfred Onslow Glasse (4 December 1889 – 13 December 1977) was a New Zealand electrical engineer and local-body politician. He was chief engineer of the Auckland Electric Power Board for 29 years, and served as president of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers in 1942–43. Glasse was later elected as an Auckland City Councillor, and was deputy mayor from 1962 to 1970. Biography Early life Glasse was born in Dunedin in 1889 and was educated at Otago Boys' High School, Dunedin Technical College and then the University of Otago. He trained as an engineer and travelled to Britain to gain further experience at the Thomson-Houston Electric Company, a large firm of electrical engineers. During World War I he enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in 1914 and was awarded the Military Cross and mentioned in dispatches. Following the war he returned to work with the same firm. George Glasse
George Henry Glasse (1761–1809) was a notable Oxford Greek and Latin scholar, domestic chaplain to the Duke of Cambridge. Biography Glasse was the son of Dr. Samuel Glasse, rector of St. Mary's in Hanwell, London and grew up in the rectory. He attended Christ Church, Oxford, receiving degrees in 1779 and in 1782, and succeeded his father as rector of St Mary's, Hanwell in 1785, having "distinguished himself very early in life by his uncommon proficiency in Hebrew literature." Glasse served as the domestic chaplain to Adolphus Frederick, Duke of Cambridge, the seventh son of George III. Involved in Poor Law reform, he was described as a man "whose learning, abilities, and good principles, have already entitled him to the thanks of his country, and will secure his fame with posterity". Hannah Glasse
Hannah Glasse (; March 1708 – 1 September 1770) was an English cookery writer of the 18th century. Her first cookery book, ''The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy'', published in 1747, became the best-selling recipe book that century. It was reprinted within its first year of publication, appeared in 20 editions in the 18th century, and continued to be published until well into the 19th century. She later wrote ''The Servants' Directory'' (1760) and ''The Compleat Confectioner'', which was probably published in 1760; neither book was as commercially successful as her first. Glasse was born in London to a Northumberland landowner and his mistress. After the relationship ended, Glasse was brought up in her father's family. When she was 16 she eloped with a 30-year-old Irish subaltern then on half-pay and lived in Essex, working on the estate of the Earls of Donegall.
