Glaskasten
The Class PtL 2/2 locomotives of the Royal Bavarian State Railways (''Königlich Bayerische Staatseisenbahn'') were light and very compact superheated steam locomotives for operation on Bavarian branch lines (known generally as ''Lokalbahnen''). There were three types in total, of which two were transferred to the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft as Class 98.3 tank locomotives and even survived to join the Deutsche Bundesbahn fleet after the Second World War. Common to all the variants was the B axle arrangement (European or UIC classification) or 0-4-0 (Whyte notation), the semi-automatic, gravity-feed firing that enabled one-man operation, and platforms with guard rails, front and rear, that enabled safe access to the coaches. The locomotives had a large driver's cab with 3 windows per side that surrounded the entire locomotive boiler as far as the smokebox. German Steam Locomotive Museum
The German Steam Locomotive Museum (''Deutsches Dampflokomotiv-Museum'') or DDM is located at the foot of the famous ''Schiefe Ebene'' ramp on the Ludwig South-North Railway in Neuenmarkt, Upper Franconia. This region is in northern Bavaria, Germany. The DDM was founded in 1977. Facilities The museum is in the former locomotive shed (''Bahnbetriebswerk'') at Neuenmarkt- Wirsberg station. It comprises a 15-road roundhouse, water cranes, a turntable with an off-centre pivot, a coaling facility and a ''Ruge'' coal crane in a newly built 'old fashioned' working coal yard. History The locomotive shed was built in 1895 by the Royal Bavarian State Railways and extended in 1923 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Amongst others, pusher locomotives e. g. DRG Class 95s (ex-Prussian T 20s) and Class 96s (ex-Bavarian Gt 2x4/4 Mallet locomotives) were stationed there. One example of a Class 95 may be seen in the museum. Royal Bavarian State Railways
The Royal Bavarian State Railways (''Königliche Bayerische Staats-Eisenbahnen'' or ''K.Bay.Sts.B.'') was the state railway company for the Kingdom of Bavaria. It was founded in 1844. The organisation grew into the second largest of the German state railways (after that of the Prussian state railways) with a railway network of 8,526 kilometres (including the Palatinate Railway or ''Pfalzbahn'') by the end of the First World War. Following the abdication of the Bavarian monarchy at the end of the First World War, the 'Royal' title was dropped and on 24 April 1920 the Bavarian State Railway (''Bayerische Staatseisenbahn''), as it was now called, was merged into the newly formed German Reich Railways Authority or Deutsche Reichseisenbahnen as the Bavarian Group Administration (''Gruppenverwaltung Bayern''). Bavarian ML 2/2
The Class ML 2/2 locomotives of the Royal Bavarian State Railways (''Königlich Bayerische Staatsbahn'') were light and very compact superheater, superheated steam locomotives designed for services on branch lines (''Lokalbahnen''). They were a rival design by Maffei (company), Maffei to the Bavarian PtL 2/2 or ''Glaskasten'' locomotives built by Georg Krauss, Krauss. In common with the Krauss engines the ML 2/2 had the UIC classification, axle arrangement B, semi-automatic gravity firing that enabled one-man operation, and Corridor connection, gangways with railings, front and rear, that allowed safe transit to the coaches. The valve gear was, however, a completely different affair. DB Museum, Koblenz
The DB Museum in Koblenz177 was opened on 21 April 2001 as the first remote site of the Nuremberg Transport Museum. It is run by volunteer workers as part of the ''Stiftung Bahn-Sozialwerk'' (BSW), a kind of railway workers social service organisation, and has its origins in a BSW's 'Group for the Preservation of Historical Railway Vehicles' at Koblenz. Emergence The DB Museum, Koblenz, is housed in the former goods wagon repair shop (''Ausbesserungswerk'') in the Koblenz district of Lützel.
