Glasgow–Edinburgh Lines
There are four electrified railway lines linking Glasgow with Edinburgh, the two largest cities in Scotland. These are, from north to south: *Glasgow–Edinburgh via Falkirk line (from Glasgow Queen Street) *North Clyde Line: Glasgow (Queen Street)–Edinburgh via Airdrie and Bathgate *Shotts Line: Glasgow (Central)–Edinburgh via Shotts *Glasgow–Edinburgh via Carstairs line, from Glasgow Central station Historically, the first line between Glasgow and Edinburgh was the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, equivalent to today's Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk Line. Former Routes Glasgow–Edinburgh via Cumbernauld line: used the Cumbernauld Line from Glasgow Queen Street, and the Edinburgh–Dunblane line. The use of this line as a secondary route between Glasgow and Edinburgh was introduced as part of the December 2018 timetable and later removed. Railway electrification in Great Britain began in the late 19th century. A range of voltages has been used, employing both overhead lines and conductor rails. The two most common systems are using overhead lines, and the third rail system used in Southeast England and on Merseyrail. The Glasgow–Edinburgh via Falkirk line is a mainline railway line linking Glasgow and Edinburgh via Falkirk in Scotland. North Clyde Line
The North Clyde Line (defined by Network Rail as the ''Glasgow North Electric Suburban'' line) is a suburban railway in West Central Scotland. The route is operated by ScotRail Trains. As a result of the incorporation of the Airdrie–Bathgate rail link and the Edinburgh–Bathgate line, this route has become the fourth rail link between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Shotts Line
The Shotts Line is a suburban railway line linking and via in Scotland. It is one of the four rail links between the two cities. Between Glasgow Central and , the line is shared with the West Coast Main Line (WCML), before branching off towards , rejoining the Edinburgh branch of the WCML at Midcalder Junction. The Glasgow–Edinburgh via Carstairs line is a main railway route which connects the Scottish cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, by means of their respective sections of the West Coast Main Line (WCML). Edinburgh And Glasgow Railway
The Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway was authorised by Act of Parliament on 4 July 1838. It was opened to passenger traffic on 21 February 1842, between its Glasgow Queen Street railway station (sometimes referred to at first as Dundas Street) and Haymarket railway station in Edinburgh. Construction cost £1,200,000 for 46 miles (74 km). The intermediate stations were at Corstorphine (later Saughton), Gogar, Ratho, Winchburgh, Linlithgow, Polmont, Falkirk, Castlecary, Croy, North Lanarkshire, Croy, Kirkintilloch (later Lenzie) and Bishopbriggs. Cumbernauld Line
The Cumbernauld Line is a suburban railway line linking Glasgow to Falkirk via Cumbernauld in Scotland. Since May 2014, the newly electrified track between Springburn and Cumbernauld has become an extension of the North Clyde network. Services All passenger services on this Line are operated by ScotRail. Following electrification between June 2013 and May 2014, Cumbernauld services became an extension of the North Clyde Line's Springburn Branch. Services from Cumbernauld arrived at Glasgow Queen Street Low Level platforms, freeing up capacity in the High Level station. Due to cancellation of the Garngad Chord, trains must reverse from Springburn. As of 2019, the existing Falkirk Grahamston service has been extended through to Edinburgh Waverley.
