Glanrhyd Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in Pen-y-fai near Bridgend in Wales. It is managed by the Cwm Taf University Health Board. History The hospital, which was designed by William Martin and John Henry Chamberlain in the Gothic Revival style using a linear corridor layout, opened as the Glamorgan County Lunatic Asylum in November 1864. Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTMUHB) ( cy, Bwrdd lechyd Prifysgol Cwm Taf Morgannwg) is the local health board of NHS Wales for Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf, and Bridgend in the south of Wales. Pen-y-fai is a village in the county borough of Bridgend (county borough), Bridgend Wales within the Bridgend electoral ward area and the community of Newcastle Higher. The ward population taken at the United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011 census was 2,447. Amenities It has a population of about 2,000, one village shop, a chapel and All Saints parish church (a Church in Wales). It also has a village pub, The Pheasant, which was once an old farmhouse. Bridgend
Bridgend (; cy, Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr or just , meaning "the end of the bridge on the Ogmore") is a town in Bridgend County Borough in Wales, west of Cardiff and east of Swansea. William Martin (architect)
William Martin (1829–1900) was a British architect who worked in Birmingham, England, particularly in the practice Martin & Chamberlain. Born in Somerset in 1829 he joined a Birmingham architect called Thomson Plevins, and then became a partner of D. R. Hill, public works architect of early 19th century Birmingham. In 1864 J. H. Chamberlain joined the practice, succeeding Hill. Martin & Chamberlain were architects to the Birmingham School Board and designed the majority of the new board schools created by the Elementary Education Act 1870, with Chamberlain doing much of the actual design work, as well as many other public buildings such as police stations, baths, and libraries. They were surveyors to the new Corporation Street from 1878. John Henry Chamberlain
John Henry Chamberlain (21 June 1831 – 22 October 1883), generally known professionally as J. H. Chamberlain, was a British nineteenth-century architect based in Birmingham. Working predominantly in the Victorian Gothic style, he was one of the earliest and foremost practical exponents of the ideas of architectural theorist John Ruskin, who selected Chamberlain as one of the trustees of his Guild of St George. Gothic Revival (also referred to as Victorian Gothic, neo-Gothic, or Gothick) is an architectural movement that began in the late 1740s in England.
