Glaisdale
Glaisdale is a village and civil parish in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire, England, within the North York Moors National Park. It lies at on the River Esk, between the villages of Lealholm and Egton Bridge, west of Whitby, and is served by Glaisdale railway station on the Esk Valley Line. The village lies on the regional walking route, the Esk Valley Walk, and on the north of England's Coast to Coast Walk. According to the 2011 UK census, Glaisdale parish had a population of 1,018, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 974. Glaisdale Parish Church is dedicated to St. Thomas and is one of five churches within the United Benefice of Middle Esk Moor. The present church dates from 1793. An earlier "Chappell of Glaisdale", a cruciform straw-thatched building, was located on the same site: a date stone of 1585 may be seen in the side of the steps leading to the present church tower. Lealholm
Lealholm is a small village in the Glaisdale civil parish of the Borough of Scarborough, in North Yorkshire, England. It is sited at a crossing point of the River Esk, in Eskdale which is within the North York Moors National Park. It is by road from the nearest town of Whitby, and approximately from both Middlesbrough and Scarborough. The village is typical of those found all across the North York Moors which straddle the main through-routes along the valley bottoms. It is mostly built of local stone with pantiled or slate roofs. Settlement around modern-day Lealholm can be traced back to the ''Domesday Book'' of 1086, with entries concerning the Manor of Crumbeclive and "Lelum" at the site of Lealholm Hall, Lealholmside. Glaisdale Railway Station
Glaisdale is a railway station on the Esk Valley Line, which runs between Middlesbrough and Whitby via Nunthorpe. The station, situated west of Whitby, serves the village of Glaisdale in North Yorkshire, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains. History The station dates from October 1865, when the Castleton to Grosmont line was opened. The signal box was moved northwards in June 1902 to allow the platform to be extended towards the west. Engineers simply raised the box onto rails and slid the box into its new position. The station used to forward building stone, iron and ironstone. Three blast furnaces were located in the village which utilised two sidings built on the north side of the station with access from the east. The iron industry lasted until 1876, but the slag heaps were cleared sometime in the 1880s with the slag being sold to Surrey County Council. Coast To Coast Walk
The Coast to Coast Walk is a long-distance footpath between the west and east coasts of Northern England, nominally long. Devised by Alfred Wainwright, it passes through three contrasting national parks: the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the North York Moors National Park. The current actual measured distance is reported as . Wainwright recommends that walkers dip their booted feet in the Irish Sea at St Bees and, at the end of the walk, in the North Sea at Robin Hood's Bay. It has been an unofficial and mostly unsignposted trail. However on 12 August 2022 it was announced that the Coast to Coast Walk would become an official National Trail, following a successful campaign by the Wainwright Society (the official Responsible Organisation for the trail). River Esk, North Yorkshire
The River Esk is a river in North Yorkshire, England that empties into the North Sea at Whitby after a course of around through the valley of Eskdale, named after the river itself. The river's name is derived from the Brythonic word "isca" meaning "water". The Esk is the only major river in Yorkshire that flows directly into the North Sea; all other watercourses defined as being major rivers by the Environment Agency, either flow to the North Sea via the River Tees or the Humber Estuary. Overview Due to its rural nature, the river is clean and healthy, supporting a wealth of wildlife. Salmon spawn right up through Eskdale, and a number of " leaps" are provided to enable them to travel through weirs on the course. Esk Valley Walk
The Esk Valley Walk is a long distance footpath in North Yorkshire, England. The route first follows a loop on the North York Moors to the south of Castleton, then shadows the River Esk on its journey to the North Sea. Waymarking uses the symbol of a leaping salmon, with yellow arrows denoting footpaths and blue arrows bridleways. From Castleton the route leads to Danby Dale, Rosedale Head and Blakey Ridge. It then passes through the remains of Esklets, a medieval sheep farm, and on to Westerdale and, passing Castleton once more, Eskdale proper. Next it reaches Danby, including the Moors National Park Centre located just outside Danby, and then climbs to Danby Beacon. The Scarborough Beckett Cricket League, founded in 1958, is a Saturday League that administer's cricket clubs that participate in its League, Cup and Trophy competitions. The league headquarters is based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The Scarborough Beckett Cricket League format is the result of an amalgamation with the Derwent Valley League in 2016. Scarborough (borough)
The Borough of Scarborough () is a non-metropolitan district and borough of North Yorkshire, England. In addition to the town of Scarborough, it covers a large stretch of the coast of Yorkshire, including Whitby and Filey. It borders Redcar and Cleveland to the north, the Ryedale and Hambleton districts to the west and the East Riding of Yorkshire to the south. Whitby
Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Scarborough borough of North Yorkshire, England. Situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby has a maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Egton Bridge
Egton Bridge is a village in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire, England. It lies within the North York Moors National Park, on the River Esk, between the villages of Glaisdale and Grosmont, about six miles south-west of Whitby, and on the route of the Esk Valley Walk. The stone bridge that crosses the Esk was rebuilt in 1992, having been destroyed by flood in the 1930s. Amenities The village is served by Egton railway station, on the Esk Valley Line, which also serves the nearby village of Egton. There are two hotels in the village: the Horseshoe Hotel and the Postgate Inn.
