Gladstone Professor Of Greek
The Gladstone Chair of Greek is an academic position that was one of the original endowments of the foundation of the University of Liverpool in 1881. The Chair was named in recognition of the scholarship of W. E. Gladstone, the British prime minister, and the close association of the Gladstone family with Liverpool. The chair fell vacant after Professor Long left in 1983 to take up a position in the United States, but was revived in 2017. Gerald Henry Rendall
Gerald Henry Rendall (1851–1945) was an English educator and college administrator, born at Harrow, where his father was assistant master. He was educated at Harrow and at Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating BA as 4th Classic in 1874. He was a fellow and assistant tutor at Trinity from 1875 to 1880. He was principal of University College, Liverpool, and Gladstone Professor of Greek in 1880-97, and then the headmaster of Charterhouse School 1897-1911. From 1891 to 1895 he was also Vice-Chancellor of the Victoria University. His most important publications were on early Christian authors writing during the Roman empire and on their late pagan opponents such as Julian the Apostate and Marcus Aurelius. Gilbert Austin Davies (15 September 1868 – 26 July 1948) was an English classical scholar. Life Davies was born in London. After education at Aldenham Grammar School and Owen’s College, Manchester, Davies went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, as a scholar in 1887. Sir John Linton Myres Kt OBE FBA FRAI (3 July 1869 in Preston – 6 March 1954 in Oxford) was a British archaeologist and academic, who conducted excavations in Cyprus in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Life He was the son of the Rev. William Miles Myres and his wife, Jane Linton, and was educated at Winchester College. He graduated B.A. at New College, Oxford in 1892. At the same year he was a Craven Fellow at the British School at Athens with which he excavated at the Minoan sanctuary of Petsofas. Regius Professor Of Greek (Cambridge)
The Regius Professorship of Greek is one of the oldest professorships at the University of Cambridge. The Regius Professor chair was founded in 1540 by Henry VIII with a stipend of £40 per year, subsequently increased in 1848 by a canonry of Ely Cathedral.
