Gladstone Parish, New Brunswick
Gladstone is a civil parish in Sunbury County, New Brunswick, Canada. For governance purposes it is divided between the villages of Fredericton Junction and Tracy and the local service district of the parish of Gladstone, all of which are members of Regional Service Commission 11 (RSC11). Origin of name The parish was named in honour of William Ewart Gladstone, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom until his defeat shortly after the House of Assembly began its 1874 session. The Canadian province of New Brunswick is divided by the ''Territorial Division Act'' into 152 parishes, units which had political significance as subdivisions of counties until the Municipalities Act of 1966. Parishes still exist in law and include any municipality, rural community, or regional municipality within their borders. They provided convenient boundaries for electoral districts and organising delivery of government services for some time after 1966 but were gradually supplanted for such purposes by local service districts (LSDs), which better represent communities of interest. York County (2016 population 99,411) is located in west-central New Brunswick, Canada. The county contains the provincial capital, Fredericton. Outside the city, farming and forestry are two major industries in the county, which is bisected by the Saint John River. The Southwest Miramichi River flows through the northern section of the county. History York County was established in 1785, named after the second son of King George III, Prince Frederick-Augustus (1763-1827), who was made Duke of York in 1784. By 1831, the top half was highly populated, due to the rich soil in the region, so it was split off to become Carleton County. New Maryland is a geographic parish in York County, New Brunswick, Canada. Prior to the 2023 governance reform, for governance purposes it was divided between the village of New Maryland the local service district of the parish of New Maryland, both of which were members of Capital Region Service Commission (RSC11). The LSD further includes the special service areas of Howorth and Nasonworth. Origin of name The parish probably came from members of the Maryland Loyalists Battalion who settled in the area. Dumbarton is a civil parish in Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada, located inland north of St. George and south of Harvey. For governance purposes, the entire parish is part of the Southwest rural district, which is a member of the Southwest New Brunswick Service Commission. Prior to the 2023 governance reform, it comprised a single local service district (LSD), which was a member of the Southwest New Brunswick Service Commission (SNBSC). Saint George is a civil parish in Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada, located between St. Stephen and Saint John. Clarendon is a civil parish in Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada, located in the interior to the north of Point Lepreau and southwest of CFB Gagetown. Origin of name The parish was named for Clarendon Settlement, which in turn was named in honour of the Earl of Clarendon, British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs at the time of it being laid out. History Clarendon was erected in 1869 from Lepreau and Pennfield Parishes. The area was first laid out for settlement in 1856, with the Clarendon Settlement being largest. Burton is a civil parish in Sunbury County, New Brunswick, Canada. For governance purposes it was divided between the town of Oromocto, the Indian reserve of Oromocto 26, CFB Gagetown, and the local service district of the parish of Burton. The town and LSD are both members of Regional Service Commission 11 (RSC11). Origin of name The parish was named in honour of Ralph Burton, military commander-in-chief in Montreal at the time of its establishment as a township. History Burton was first established in 1765 as a Nova Scotia township. Burton was erected in 1786 as one of the original parishes of Sunbury County. The parish extended further inland than the township. In 1835 the rear of the parish was included in the newly erected Blissville Parish. Origin of name The parish may have been named for its proximity to York County, as the traditional English counties of Lincolnshire and Yorkshire shared a border.
