Glaciers Of Georgia
The glaciers of Georgia are mainly located along the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range. Geography The spatial distribution of contemporary glaciers in the territory of Georgia is stipulated by the peculiarities of atmospheric processes, morphological-morphometric conditions of the relief and their interaction. Main centers of glaciation are related to the elevated Greater Caucasus watershed range and Kazbegi massif. Individual centers can be found in the Greater Caucasus branch ranges: Bzipi, Kodori, Samegrelo, Svaneti, Lechkhumi Range, Pirikita, etc. According to the data of 2015 there are 637 glaciers in Georgia with a total area of 355.80 km2. Contemporary glaciers are mainly concentrated in the Enguri, Rioni, Kodori and Tergi River basins, where there are the peaks of 4500 m and higher. 89.32% of the amount and 97.15% of the area of glaciers of Georgia are located in these basins. Bzyb River
The Bzyb or Bzipi ( or ; ka, ბზიფი, Bzipi; ab, Бзыҧ, Bzyṗ; russian: Бзыбь, Bzybj) is one of the two largest rivers of Abkhazia, along with the Kodori, and the twelfth longest river in Georgia. The river valley has rich biodiversity of herbaceous garden plants, particularly in the gorge section in the upper reaches where the most prominent and colourful bellflower ' with profuse growth of 100 flowers per plant is given the name, the "Queen of the Abkhazian flora". During 1904-1917 it served as the border between Russian Empire's Sukhumi Okrug and Black Sea Governorate. Etymology It is significant, that "Bzipi" is a comparatively new name of the river. Until the 1820s it was called "Kapoetis Tskali" (literally meaning "Water of Kapoeti"). This is a Georgian name and comes from the name of the fish "Kapoeti". Tviberi Glacier
Tviberi ( ka, ტვიბერი) is a glacier located in the Svaneti Region of Georgia on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range. The length of the Tviberi Glacier is and its surface area is . The tongue of the glacier descends to above sea level. Tviberi represents a polisynthetic type of a valley glacier. It has many tributaries among which are Laskhedari, Iriti, Asmashi, Toti, Seri and others. The surface of Tviberi is mainly covered with morainal sediments and debris. Lekhziri Glacier
Lekhziri Glacier ( ka, ლეხზირი) is a valley glacier located on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range in the Svaneti Region of Georgia. The length of the glacier is and its surface area is . The tongue of the glacier descends down to above sea level. Lekhziri consists of three separate glaciers; North, East and West Lekhziri. From the point where the three different glaciers intersect, the surface of Lekhziri becomes largely covered with morainal sediments and debris. Gergeti
Gergeti ( ka, გერგეტი; also known as Ortsveri) is a glacier located on the southeastern slope of Mt. Kazbek in the Kazbegi District of Georgia. The length of the Gergeti glacier is and its surface area is . The tongue of Gergeti descends to above sea level. Most of the glacier is located within an old and eroded volcanic caldera, where, at the edge of the caldera's northern rim, rises the cone of Mt. Kazbek. The southern rim of the caldera where the glacier descends, is bounded by Mount Ortsveri. Devdaraki
Devdaraki ( ka, დევდარაკი) is a valley glacier located on the northeastern slope of Mt. Kazbek. The length of the glacier is and its surface area is . The tongue of the Devdaraki Glacier descends to above sea level. Devdaraki is known for its intense surging properties that have caused significant destruction in the past (particularly from the late 18th to the late 19th centuries). The glacier surges have led to catastrophic mudflows in the Dariali Gorge which have, on several occasions damaged the Georgian Military Highway. Lagodekhi
Lagodekhi ( ka, ლაგოდეხი) is a town, located at the foot of the Greater Caucasus mountains between the rivers Lagodekhiskhevi and Shromiskhevi, in the historical region of Hereti (now part of Kakheti). Lagodekhi has a number of nearby waterfalls and includes the Lagodekhi Nature Reserve, established in 1912 and first noted by Polish botanist Ludwik Młokosiewicz for having a variety of tree species. Three kilometers east of the town is the border crossing with Azerbaijan's Balakan Province. Lagodekhi is in the Kakheti district of Georgia.
