''Girls of the Golden West'' is an opera in two acts with music by John Adams and a libretto by Peter Sellars. The San Francisco Opera commissioned the work jointly with Dallas Opera, the Dutch National Opera (De Nationale Opera) and Teatro La Fenice in Venice. The opera was premiered in San Francisco on November 21, 2017. The running time is 160 minutes. Composition history The opera is inspired by the 1851/1852 letters of Louise Clappe, who lived for a year and a half in the mining settlement of Rich Bar (now Diamondville, California) during the California Gold Rush. Clappe published the letters under the pen name Dame Shirley. The libretto is also sourced from other literature of the period, including newspaper articles and the writings of Mark Twain. ''The Girl of the Golden West'' is a theatrical play written, produced and directed by David Belasco, set in the California Gold Rush. The four-act melodrama opened at the old Belasco Theatre in New York on November 14, 1905 and ran for 224 performances. Blanche Bates originated the role of The Girl, Robert C. Hilliard played Dick Johnson, and Frank Keenan played Jack Rance. Bates was joined by Charles Millward and Cuyler Hastings for two-week Broadway runs in 1907 and 1908. William Furst composed the play's incidental music. The play toured throughout the US for several years. Paul Appleby (tenor)
Paul Appleby (born June 29, 1983) is an American operatic tenor. In 2009 he won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. In November 2015 he made his debut at the San Francisco Opera as Tamino in Mozart's ''The Magic Flute''. In December 2015 he was the tenor soloist in Mozart's ''Coronation Mass'' with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and in January 2016 he performed Belmonte in Mozart's ''Die Entführung aus dem Serail'' with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. He sang Belmonte again at the Metropolitan Opera in May 2016. Appleby is a graduate of St. Joseph High School (South Bend, Indiana), and the University of Notre Dame. A tenor is a type of classical music, classical male singing human voice, voice whose vocal range lies between the countertenor and baritone voice types. It is the highest male chest voice type. Davóne Tines
Davóne Tines is an American operatic bass-baritone, known for creating roles in new works and for his collaborations with director Peter Sellars. Education Raised in Orlean, Virginia, Tines sang with the First Providence Baptist Church choir there, played violin, and attended Fauquier High School in Warrenton, Virginia from 2001 to 2005. He earned a bachelor's degree in sociology at Harvard University. Following undergraduate studies, Tines was an intern at the American Repertory Theatre, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He then worked as production manager for the opera program at George Mason University, where he took voice lessons. Bass-baritone
A bass-baritone is a high-lying bass or low-lying "classical" baritone voice type which shares certain qualities with the true baritone voice. The term arose in the late 19th century to describe the particular type of voice required to sing three Wagnerian roles: the title role in ''Der fliegende Holländer'', Wotan/Der Wanderer in the ''Ring Cycle'' and Hans Sachs in '' Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg''. Grant Gershon (born November 10, 1960) is a Grammy Award winning American conductor and pianist. He is Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Resident Conductor of the Los Angeles Opera, member of the Board of Councillors for the USC Thornton School of Music and a member of the Chorus America Board of Directors. ''Doctor Atomic'' is an opera by the contemporary American composer John Adams, with libretto by Peter Sellars. It premiered at the San Francisco Opera on October 1, 2005. The work focuses on how leading figures at Los Alamos dealt with the great stress and anxiety of preparing for the test of the first atomic bomb (the "Trinity" test). In 2007, a documentary was made by Jon Else about the creation of the opera and collaboration between Adams and Sellars, titled ''Wonders Are Many''. Composition history The first act takes place about a month before the bomb is to be tested, and the second act is set in the early morning of July 16, 1945 (the day of the test).
