Herbert Selpin
Herbert Selpin (29 May 1904 – 1 August 1942) was a German film director and screenwriter of light entertainment during the 1930s and 1940s. He is best known for his final film, the partly suppressed ''Titanic (1943 film), Titanic'', during the production of which he was arrested by Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. He was later found dead in his prison cell. Life and career Herbert Selpin was born on 29 May 1904 in Berlin. After his medical studies in the same city, Selpin worked as a dancer, boxer, librarian, and art seller before he obtained, in the mid-1920s, an internship at the prestigious Universum Film AG, UFA film studios. Among other assignments at UFA, he worked on the set of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's ''Faust (1926 film), Faust'' (1926). Heinrich Schroth
Heinrich August Franz Schroth (23 March 1871 – 14 January 1945) was a German stage and film actor. Career Schroth was born in Pirmasens, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. He made his acting debut at the Sigmaringen Royal Theatre in 1890. In 1894 he went to the Municipal Theatre in Augsburg, in 1896 to Mainz and in 1897 to the Royal Court Theatre in Hanover. From 1899 to 1905, he spent six years as a part of the ensemble of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg and from 1905 onwards at various Berlin theatres. Schroth made his film debut in the 1916 Walter Schmidthässler-directed drama ''Welker Lorbeer''. He spent the 1910s in numerous German silent film productions, working with such directors as George Jacoby, Robert Wiene and Harry Piel. His career in the 1920s was prolific, and he appeared opposite such silent film actors as Lil Dagover, Emil Jannings, Paul Wegener and Brigitte Helm and transitioned to sound film with ease. Oscar Joost
Oskar Joost (9 June 1898 – 29 May 1941) was a German musician, who played violin, tenor saxophone and clarinet, as well as directing a dance orchestra. Biography Joost was born into a musical family in Wissembourg, Alsace on 9 June 1898. His father, Albert Joost, was a cellist in the military. Oskar attended high school in Leipzig and participated in the First World War as a volunteer. In 1924, Oskar and his brother Ali formed the Oscar Joost Dance Orchestra, with Oskar spelling his name with a 'c' instead of a 'k'. Oscar played first violin, and his brother percussion. From 1930, the Orchestra began playing in the Berlin Eden hotel, which led to a recording contract with Electrola, followed by subsequent contracts with other record labels: Pallas (1931), Crystal (1931–1934), Ultraphon/Telefunken (1932), Grammophon/Polydor (1934–1941). Paul Henckels
Paul Henckels (9 September 1885 – 27 May 1967) was a German film and stage actor. He appeared in more than 230 films between 1921 and 1965. Paul Henckels had started his acting career on the stage in the 1900s. He was well known for his eccentric, colourful roles and his trademark Rhineland accent. Among his most popular roles were the school teacher Professor Bömmel in ''Die Feuerzangenbowle'' (1944) and the veterinarian Dr. Pudlich in the "Immenhof film series" during the 1950s. He was also notable as a stage actor and appeared at the Schauspielhaus Berlin for many years. His most popular stage role was '' Wibbel the Tailor'', which he played more than 1000 times. Henckel's father was Jewish, and he was thus a "half-Jew" by the rules of the Nazis. As a rare exception, Henckels was nonetheless allowed to work during the Third Reich.
