Girlfriends (magazine)
''Girlfriends'' was a women's magazine that provided critical coverage of culture, entertainment and world events from a lesbian perspective. It was founded by the couple Jacob and Diane Anderson-Minshall, and Heather Findlay. It also offered relationship, health and travel advice. Published monthly from San Francisco since 1993, it was distributed nationwide by Disticor. It had the same publisher as lesbian erotica magazine '' On Our Backs'', but distanced itself from its pornographic counterpart by refusing to carry sexual ads. ''Girlfriends'' magazine ceased publication in 2006. One of the major features of the magazine was its annual list on the best cities for a lesbian to live in, which it began publishing in 1994. The magazine also ran an online personals service through its website while it was still in operation. Melissa 'The Missile' Giove (born 1972) is an American professional downhill mountain biker. Throughout her career she won 14 NORBA downhill titles and 11 world cups. Giove's other accomplishments include three overall NORBA downhill crowns, two World Cup overalls, and the 1994 World Championship title. Career Giove was born in Manhattan, NY. Jacob Anderson-Minshall
Jacob Anderson-Minshall (born September 14, 1967) is an American author. Early life and education Assigned as female at birth, Anderson-Minshall was raised Catholic on a farm outside of Inkom, Idaho. He cites his mother's influence in social justice issues sparking his interest since preschool, and went with his mom to women's rights rallies and campaigned for the Equal Rights Amendment. In high school, he spent a year in Germany as part of the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program. He also participated in anti-nuclear protests. In college, Anderson-Minshall was active in the anti-Apartheid movement opposing South Africa's system of apartheid and supporting South Africa's non-whites, and marched in support of women's reproductive rights. ''On Our Backs'' was the first women-run erotica magazine and the first magazine to feature lesbian erotica for a lesbian audience in the United States. It ran from 1984 to 2006.
