"Girlfriend" is a song by American singer Perri "Pebbles" Reid, Pebbles from her 1987 Pebbles (Pebbles album), self-titled debut studio album. Written and produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface (musician), Babyface, "Girlfriend" was released as the album's lead single on October 26, 1987, by record label MCA Records, MCA. The song charted in several countries, peaking at number five on the US Billboard Hot 100, ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and reaching the top 10 in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Background The song was originally intended for Vanessa L. Williams, Vanessa Williams' debut album ''The Right Stuff (album), The Right Stuff''. According to L.A. Perri Arlette Reid (née McKissack; August 29, 1964), known professionally as the recording artist Pebbles, is an American recording artist, singer-songwriter, businesswoman, record producer, and music executive. Reid is known for her hit songs during the late 1980s and early 1990s such as "Girlfriend (Pebbles song), Girlfriend" (1987), "Mercedes Boy" (1988), "Giving You the Benefit" (1990), "Love Makes Things Happen", (1990), and "Backyard (Pebbles song), Backyard" (1991). St Ives is a suburb on the Upper North Shore of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia 18 kilometres north of the Sydney Central Business District in the local government area of Ku-ring-gai Council. ''Welcome to the Beautiful South'' is the debut album by English band The Beautiful South, released in October 1989 by Go! Discs and the next year in the United States by Elektra Records. Three singles were released from the album, which became top 40 hits in the United Kingdom: " Song for Whoever" (#1), "You Keep It All In" (#8) and "I'll Sail This Ship Alone" (#31). The original album cover depicted two pictures by Jan Saudek, one of a woman with a gun in her mouth, and another with a man smoking. Woolworths refused to stock the album, in the words of the band, to "prevent the hoards '' ic' of impressionable young fans from blowing their heads off in a gun-gobbling frenzy, or taking up smoking"; An alternative cover featuring a picture of a stuffed toy rabbit and a teddy bear was therefore made. The Beautiful South
The Beautiful South were an English pop rock group formed in 1988 by Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway, two former members of the Hull group The Housemartins, both of whom performed lead and backing vocals. Other members throughout the band's existence were former Housemartins roadie Sean Welch (bass), Dave Stead (drums) and Dave Rotheray (guitar). The band's original material was written by Heaton and Rotheray. After the band's first album, ''Welcome to the Beautiful South'' (1989, recorded as a quintet), they were joined by a succession of female vocalists. UK Garage
UK garage, abbreviated as UKG, is a genre of electronic dance music which originated in England in the early to mid-1990s. The genre was most clearly inspired by garage house, but also incorporates elements from dance-pop, R&B, and jungle. It is defined by percussive, shuffled rhythms with syncopated hi-hats, cymbals, and snares, and may include either 4/4 house kick patterns or more irregular " 2-step" rhythms. Garage tracks also commonly feature 'chopped up' and time-stretched or pitch-shifted vocal samples complementing the underlying rhythmic structure at a tempo usually around 130 BPM.
