Gathorne Robert Girdlestone
Gathorne Robert Girdlestone (1881–1950), often known as GRG, was a pioneering orthopaedic surgeon, the founder of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, and the first Nuffield Professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Oxford. Life Gathorne Robert Girdlestone was born in 1881, the son of Robert Baker Girdlestone, Canon of Christ Church, Oxford and first Principal of Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. He went to Charterhouse and then to New College, Oxford. Girdlestone died in 1950. Work In 1943 Girdlestone described an Orthopedic procedure which is intended to rescue hip joints in humans and more commonly these days, in animals. Henry Girdlestone
Rev. Henry Girdlestone, M.A. (5 July 1863 – 29 June 1926), often referred to as Canon Girdlestone, was head master of St Peter's College from 1894 to 1916 and of Melbourne Grammar School from 1917 to 1919. History Girdlestone was born at Penkridge, Staffordshire, the eldest son of Eliza Jane Girdlestone, née Webb and Henry Girdlestone, a Church of England clergyman. He grew up at the rectory of Bathampton and was educated at Bath College and Magdalen College, Oxford University, where he graduated BA and MA and rowed for Oxford. In 1888 he returned to Bath College as a tutor, and was briefly a private tutor to one of the Lords Ashtown. In 1891 he entered holy orders in the Diocese of Bath and Wells and was ordained in 1892. In 1893 Bishop Kennion was in England recruiting teaching staff for St Peter's College, Adelaide, and Girdlestone successfully applied for the position of headmaster. Charles Girdlestone
Charles Girdlestone (1797–1881) was an English clergyman and biblical commentator. Life The second son of Samuel Rainbow Girdlestone, a chancery barrister, was born in London in March 1797; Edward Girdlestone, canon of Bristol, was his younger brother. He was educated at Tunbridge School, under Vicesimus Knox, and in 1815 entered Wadham College, Oxford, where he held two exhibitions, one for Hebrew, the other for botany. In 1818 he graduated B.A., with a first class in classics and a second in mathematics, at the same time as Edward Greswell, Josiah Forshall, and Richard Bethell, also of Wadham. He was elected to an open fellowship at Balliol College, and was appointed catechetical, logical, and mathematical lecturer in the college. He was ordained deacon in 1820 and priest in 1821, taking his M.A. degree in the same year. Cuthbert Morton Girdlestone (17 September 1895 – 10 December 1975) was a British musicology, musicologist and literary scholar. Born in Bovey Tracey, Devon, he was educated at University of Cambridge, Cambridge and the University of Paris, Sorbonne, and thereafter took up the chair in French in Armstrong College, Newcastle, Armstrong College, later to be King's College in Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle in 1926, a position he held until 1960. His most famous publications are his much-reprinted study of the Mozart Piano Concertos (1939, published originally in French) and his biography of Jean-Philippe Rameau (1957). Errol Girdlestone (born 1945) is a British music conductor. He lives in the south of France, and works from there as a freelance conductor. His local base is as Music Director of Syrinx Concerts in Vence, an organisation with a professional orchestra and two choirs - one amateur, one professional. He read Music at Oxford University and subsequently studied conducting in Warsaw. He began his professional career in St. Paul's Cathedral choir, and as a singer in several London ensembles, including the Monteverdi Choir, Cantores in Ecclesia, and the Hilliard Ensemble, of which he was a founder member. He was later to join the music staff of the English National Opera, where he assisted Reginald Goodall on Wagner's Ring Cycle, before becoming a conductor himself - at the Cape Town Opera in South Africa. Stephen Michael Harding Oliver (10 March 1950 – 29 April 1992) was an English composer, best known for his operas. Early life and education Oliver was born on 10 March 1950 in Chester, the son of (Charlotte Hester) (née Girdlestone, born 1911), a religious education adviser, and Osborne George Oliver (born 1903), an electricity board official. His maternal great-grandfather was William Boyd Carpenter, a Bishop of Ripon and a court chaplain to Queen Victoria. Oliver was educated at St Paul's Cathedral School, Ardingly College and at Worcester College, Oxford, where he read music under Kenneth Leighton and Robert Sherlaw Johnson. John Oliver
John William Oliver (born 23 April 1977) is a British-American comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor, and television host. Oliver started his career as a stand-up comedian in the United Kingdom.
