Aimé Girard
Alfred Claude Aimé Girard (22 December 1831 – 12 April 1898) was a French chemist and agronomist who was a professor at the ''Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers''. Biography He was a member of the ''Académie d'Agriculture'', the ''Académie des sciences'' (1894-1898) and the ''Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques'' (1897-1898, resident member). He wrote many publications throughout his lifetime on various topics from the fabrication of paper to the cultivation of industrial potatoes. (All published between 1861-1898) He was a member of the board of directors of the Société française de photographie in 1863 and had been a member of that society from 1855. Stephen Girard
Stephen Girard (May 20, 1750 – December 26, 1831; born Étienne Girard) was a naturalized American citizen, philanthropist, and banker of French origin. He singularly saved the U.S. government from financial collapse during the War of 1812 by personally financing the war, and is known to have been the first multi-millionaire in US history. He is estimated to have been the fourth richest American of all time, based on the ratio of his fortune to contemporary GDP. Childless, he devoted much of his fortune to philanthropy, particularly the education and welfare of orphans. Sam Girard
Samuel Girard (born May 12, 1998) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman for the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League (NHL). After playing major junior hockey with the Shawinigan Cataractes, Girard was drafted 47th overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. He briefly played for the Predators until he was traded to the Avalanche in 2017. Girard won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022. As a member of the Colorado Avalanche, Girard improved his on-ice success recording career-high numbers in his first three seasons. During the 2019–20 season, Girard joined fellow defensemen Cale Makar in the 30 points club, making the Avalanche the first team with multiple defensemen under the age of 22 who have at least 30 points since 1993–94. René Girard (born 4 April 1954) is a French football manager and former player. Early life Girard was born in Vauvert, Gard. Playing career Girard won seven caps, scoring one goal for France and was a member of the squad that finished fourth at the 1982 World Cup. At club level, while playing for Bordeaux, Girard won three Ligue 1 titles – in 1983–84, 1984–85 and 1986–87, as well as two Coupes de France, over Marseille in the 1986 and 1987 editions. Coaching career Girard managed Nîmes, Strasbourg, Pau FC and multiple France youth teams. He coached the France national under-21 team from 2004–2008. Acting career Girard played the role of Rémy, the main character, who is dying of terminal cancer, in the Canadian film ''The Barbarian Invasions'' (''Les Invasions barbares'') by director Denys Arcand. Pierre-Simon Girard
Pierre-Simon Girard (4 November 1765 – 30 November 1836) was a French mathematician and engineer, who worked on fluid mechanics. Girard was born in Caen. A prodigy who invented a water turbine at the age of ten, he worked as an engineer at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées. He was in charge of planning and construction of the Amiens canal and the Ourcq canal. He collaborated with Gaspard de Prony on the ''Dictionnaire des Ponts et Chaussées'' (Dictionary of Bridges and Highways, 1787). He wrote on fluids, and in 1798 he published a monograph, ''Traité analytique de la résistance des solides'' on beam theory, including possibly its first history, within the topic of strength of materials. The complicated beam equations were not of practical much use, since he applied Euler's non-linear theory. Philippe Henri de Girard (February 1, 1775 – August 26, 1845aged 70) was a French engineer and inventor of the first flax spinning frame in 1810, and the person after whom the town of Żyrardów in Poland was named. He was also the uncredited inventor of food preservation using tin cans. Maurice Jean Auguste Girard (13 September 1822 – 8 September 1886) was a French entomologist. Girard was born in Givet, Ardennes, and entered École normale supérieure in 1844. In 1847 he taught physics in Périgueux. After having obtained his ''agrégation'', he left for Dijon where he taught from 1853 to 1873. during this time he obtained his “licence” and his “doctorat ès-sciences naturelles” with a thesis entitled Étude sur la chaleur libre dégagée par les animaux invertébrés et spécialement les insectes. He edited L'Insectologie agricole, journal traitant des insectes utiles... et des insectes nuisibles... from 1867 to 1870.
