Giovanni Rossi (bicycle Racer)
Giovanni Rossi (7 May 1926 – 17 September 1983) was a Swiss professional road bicycle racer. He was professional from 1949 to 1954 where he won two victories. In the only Tour de France that he participated, Rossi won the first stage and wore the yellow jersey as leader of the general classification for one stage after his win. His other victory was a stage win in the Tour de Suisse, also in 1951. He also finished second in another stage in that year’s Tour de France and came second in the 1951 Swiss road race championships behind 1950 Tour de France winner Ferdinand "Ferdi" Kübler. He also competed in the individual and team road race events at the 1948 Summer Olympics. The 1948 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XIV Olympiad and also known as London 1948) were an international multi-sport event held from 29 July to 14 August 1948 in London, England, United Kingdom. Following a twelve-year hiatus caused by the outbreak of World War II, these were the first Summer Olympics held since the 1936 Summer Olympics, 1936 Games in Berlin. The general classification is the most important classification, the one by which the winner of the Tour de France is determined. Since 1919, the leader of the general classification wears the yellow jersey (french: maillot jaune ). History The winner of the first Tour de France wore a green armband, not a yellow jersey. After the second Tour de France, the rules were changed, and the general classification was no longer calculated by time, but by points. This points system was kept until 1912, after which it changed back into the time classification. At that time, the leader still did not wear a yellow jersey. There is doubt over when the yellow jersey began. The men's team road race cycling event at the 1948 Olympic Games took place on 13 August and was one of six events at the 1948 Olympics. Teams had four riders and the team time taken as sum of the team's three best finishers. The race was won by the Belgian team. However, the Belgian cyclists were not aware that there was a team competition, and returned to Belgium, missing the medal ceremony. Only in 2010 did they receive their medals.
