Giovanni Procacci
Giovanni Procacci (born May 4, 1955 in Bari), is an Italian politician, and was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies in the 2006 General election. Previously he was a Member of the European Parliament and a member of its Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. After earning a degree in literature and philosophy in 1978, he worked as a non-tenured lecturer from 1978 to 1983, and as a tenured lecturer from 1984 to 1999. From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the European Parliament during its 5th term. He is a member of La Margherita, which is a part of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe. From 1996 to 2001 he was a member of the national leadership of I Democratici. He was a member of the national executive of I Democratici from 1998 to 2001. Christian Democracy ( it, Democrazia Cristiana, DC) was a Christian democratic political party in Italy. The DC was founded on 15 December 1943 in the Italian Social Republic (Nazi-occupied Italy) as the ideal successor of the Italian People's Party, which had the same symbol, a crusader shield (''scudo crociato''). As a Catholic-inspired, centrist, catch-all party comprising both centre-right and centre-left political factions, the DC played a dominant role in the politics of Italy for fifty years, and had been part of the government from soon after its inception until its final demise on 16 January 1994 amid the ''Tangentopoli'' scandals.
