Giovanni Ceirano (nuncio)
Giovanni Ceirano (20 July 1927 – 30 January 2006) was an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He became an archbishop in 1990 and served as Apostolic Nuncio from 1990 to 1999. Biography Giovanni Ceirano was born in Lagnasco, Italy, on 20 July 1927. He was ordained a priest on 1 July 1951. He earned a doctorate in civil and canon law at the Pontifical Lateran University. To prepare for a diplomatic career he entered the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1954. He joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1956. His assignments included stints in Bolivia, Haiti, Austria, Scandinavia, South Africa, Congo, and Tanzania. He worked in the Vatican Mission in Jerusalem and in Bonn. He was named Permanent Representative of the Holy See at the IAEA and Permanent Observer at UNIDO on 3 March 1983. Apostolic Nuncio
An apostolic nuncio ( la, nuntius apostolicus; also known as a papal nuncio or simply as a nuncio) is an ecclesiastical diplomat, serving as an envoy or a permanent diplomatic representative of the Holy See to a state or to an international organization. A nuncio is appointed by and represents the Holy See, and is the head of the diplomatic mission, called an Apostolic Nunciature, which is the equivalent of an embassy. The Holy See is legally distinct from the Vatican City or the Catholic Church. In modern times, a nuncio is usually an archbishop. An apostolic nuncio is generally equivalent in rank to that of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary, although in Catholic countries the nuncio often ranks above ambassadors in diplomatic protocol. Apostolic Nunciature To Sweden
The Holy See established what has evolved into its Apostolic Nunciature to the Nordic Countries on 16 March 1960 under the title Apostolic Delegation to Scandinavia with responsibility for representing the interests of the pope and the Catholic Church in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. It was originally located in Vedbæk, Denmark; since 2002 its office has been in Djursholm, Sweden, a suburb of Stockholm. The Holy See now has diplomatic relations with each of those countries and the Holy See appoints a nuncio, to date always the same person, to each of them. The representative of the Holy See holds an ecclesiastical office, but the title varies according to the office's relationship to governments. Piero Biggio
Piero Biggio (29 June 1937 – 18 April 2007) was an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. Biography Piero Biggio was born on 29 June 1937 in Calasetta, Province of Carbonia-Iglesias, Sardinia, Italy. He was ordained a priest on 5 August 1962. In 1968, he obtained a Licentiate of Canon Law at the Pontifical Lateran University and then completed the two-year program at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy from 1968 to 1970. In 1970 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. His first assignment was in the Apostolic Nunciature in Panama. Other postings followed in Chile, Zambia, Australia, Switzerland and Taiwan. On 10 December 1988, Pope John Paul II appointed him titular archbishop of Otriculum and Apostolic Nuncio to Bangladesh. He received his episcopal consecration from the Secretary of State Cardinal Agostino Casaroli on 25 February 1989. Biggio was apostolic nuncio in Chile from 1992 to 1999. In that ro ...
